Places to be that aren't here

Since I worked an 8.30-8.15 day yesterday, I'm sadly no closer to having a full Morocco report for you.
But I do have some links:
that_other_show is a new comm set up by
rivers_bend as a space for talking about shows you enjoy and want to squee about to other people, but you're not necessarily creatively-fannish about. Since I have a long, long list of these, I've joined and encourage everyone to do the same.
sticksandsnark have opened this year's Rodney/Teyla thingathon, which I may or may not take part in, as scheduling and inspiration allow. Sign-ups close 30th January.
purimgifts is also open for this year's fic gift exchange, with sign-ups here, closing on 22nd January. I had to drop out last year, and probably won't be able to sign up this year, but the variety of stories is truly staggering and well worth looking out for.
On a post that will spoil you hugely for "Vegas",
bironic has written the most inspired piece of *cough* fannish Shakespeare. Genius.
One thing I did manage to read on holiday was
greyias's SGA Big Bang entry, See No Evil. Run, don't walk, to read this fic. Yes, it's long, but it's fast-paced and I was so caught up that I wouldn't have complained if it had been twice the length. I also convinced my other half to read it, and he loved it too!
I'm a sucker for a good AU anyway, but this AU was even more striking because it's only a side-step from our reality and all-too believable. Grey takes a simple 'what if' and spins it into something that encompasses adventure, comedy (seriously - the drunk!Rodney scene had me giggling like a crazy woman) and friendship, as well as a tight plot that kept me guessing until the whole thing exploded and I was swept along for the ride.
Rodney and John are still very much themselves, and I even liked Carson in this (he's not my favourite character usually). The technobabble is spot on, the action vivid and the plot satisfying. And it's got a cracker of an ending.
Go read. Now. *shoos*
And just because I can,

Me, our muleteer Hammad, and what everyone calls 'A Berber 4x4'

Stopping for lunch. I still find it hard to believe that that backdrop is real, not just a National Geographic picture with me photoshopped onto it. But then I felt like that when we were there, as well.

Date: 2009-01-20 10:41 am (UTC)Go to Morocco. Go in spring/autumn so it's not too hot, or even January (I know you like the cold :D). Stay here (http://www.darzaman.com/). Be amazed.
These pictures are just the tip of the iceberg.

Date: 2009-01-20 10:47 am (UTC)I'm actually thinking about Egypt as well...
*thinks*
If I don't get fired, and accumulate all my annual leave, I might be able to do them both in Dec 2010?
*plans*

Date: 2009-01-20 12:59 pm (UTC)And as much as I loved the Squeee Odyssey and missed seeing you while there, I'm glad you had such a wonderful time in Morocco. It's been on my list of places to go when I get the chance, and now seeing those incredibly pictures I think it's moved up a bit!

Gorgeous. I hadn't known Morocco has snowy-mountainous and step-farming (steppe-farming?) regions like that either.
And eee, thank you for the rec!

Date: 2009-01-20 02:20 pm (UTC)Morocco has 3 mountain ranges (high, medium and low Atlas, according to our guide) - these are the High ones. Then it has the desert, and the coast. It's just *waves hands* Has to be seen to be believed.
*g* You're more than welcome. I nearly died of squee reading it, so it was the least I could do ;)
