Snowy Monday
Feb. 2nd, 2009 09:11 amThe world outside my office window is white this morning. It's very pretty from here. It was less fun doing my funky penguin walk through it on the way to work. If it doesn't clear up by lunchtime, no way on earth am I going to Witney tonight (I have Slimming World there on Monday evenings). I'm going home to hot chocolate and my lamb casserole instead.
How was everyone's weekend? Uneventful? Exciting? I spent it cooking, cleaning, then on a 6 mile walk round Port Meadow in the sunshine. Of course, it was freezing cold as well, but it was good to get some sun, especially since the sky is grey all the way down to the horizon this morning.
In case you don't have much going on (everyone's suspiciously quiet at the moment), allow me to find you thinks to occupy your time:
tardis_bigbang sign-ups opened yesterday. Click to go to the sign-up page:

We've got some great authors this year - some old friends, some new but well-known names - and I'd love to see you all there. Trust me, 20,000 words fly by when you get going. We're also going to need some stellar artists to keep up with our writers, so please think about putting your name down for that as well.

halfamoon also opened yesterday.

This is a 14 day fest for posting fic, recs or artwork about the wonderful women in fandom. So far, my favourite post is this icon one, and I'm thinking of contributing the odd ficlet myself. Do go join in - all lengths, all ratings, all fandoms are more than welcome.

sga_genficathon opened yesterday too! (February's the month for it, I can tell you). Click for sign-ups:

I loved this last year, and turned out what I think is one of the best stories I've ever written for it. The way the prompting works is also really cool, and even if you don't usually write Gen, do have a think about it. You never know what you can do until you try!

I think that's something for everyone. Beating the winter blues, one ficathon at a time :)

Date: 2009-02-02 09:49 am (UTC)If I could think of a plot, I'd be tempted to have another go at TARDIS big bang. I'll have a thinky.

Date: 2009-02-02 09:53 am (UTC)I don't really believe in plots - I tend to pick a macguffin and something I want to say about the character (not necessarily in that order ;)) and just see what happens. It's incredibly surprising how quickly the words pile up. *makes encouraging noises* There are no penalties for signing up and not making it, and it might just be a useful source of inspiration!

Date: 2009-02-02 10:21 am (UTC)You know, I have a rather long TW/DW fic at the beta at the moment that's just over 20,000 words. Can I cheat and enter that? :P
Problem is, about 900-1000 words of that has been posted since it started as a comment fic and just kinda... grew.

Date: 2009-02-02 10:34 am (UTC)Do we get pretty snowy pictures later?

Date: 2009-02-02 10:34 am (UTC)Damn. ;)
Kinda figured that though which is why I didn't sign up on the Author's page. I'll stick to art then. I can't write under pressure. Art is fine, writing, not so much.
Though, at the rate the beta process is going, I can't be sure the thing would be ready when bigbang goes live. First beta took 3 month, then it took me 3 weeks after I got it back to edit it. Now it's been a month since I sent it to the 2nd beta, so yeah... might take a while. Best stick to art. *nods*

Date: 2009-02-02 12:43 pm (UTC)Have signed up for the Big Bang - I have a couple of historical TW bunnies that should fit the brief and that I really need to get out of my head at some point! Just need to decide which of them to do now.
Right, off to make pancakes, methinks. :)

Date: 2009-02-02 12:45 pm (UTC)Heh, probably not today, since I don't have the camera and it was too dark for photos this morning. But we're due more later in the week so I'll see what I can do :D

Date: 2009-02-02 12:48 pm (UTC)Yay! If even half the stories get written, we're going to top last year for sure. And I didn't know that was possible. Also, 'gen-with-jack' should be its own genre. Definitely.
Ooh, yum. I'm out to lunch so I just hope the place we're going has power! Three libraries have lost it so far...

Date: 2009-02-02 01:36 pm (UTC)halfamoon sounds interesting. I wish I had a better voice for my female characters.
Does the gen_fication thing have a word count minimum? I looked but couldn't find one (never mind, found it- 2k). Which did you write for it last year? (And I hope you know to give a holler when you need beta-ing for this one)

Date: 2009-02-02 02:40 pm (UTC)There's going to be some good stuff over at
I wrote Bibula Harena (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_genficathon/9606.html) for it last year, which I still think is one of the best things I've written. (heh, you betcha!)

Date: 2009-02-02 05:17 pm (UTC)... didn't you write for it last year? Or am I remembering wrong? Perhaps I'm just mis-remembering.
(And thank you, Jadesfire, for the pimping post! Bibula Harena was wonderful, and I'm glad to have you back. :D )

I have a lot of questions about lower word limits, too. I will try to work up a post when I finish grading that stack of papers. Oh, and then that other stack. ::headdesk::
Thank you for the
