jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (CM - Reid - good time for coffee)
Today is a MOAR SNOW OH GOOD GRIEF day, and everything is still drenched in white out there. I too was drenched when I got to work, thanks to a two and a half mile walk from home. The latest pictures are all under the cut, and show just how thickly it was coming down here.

In other news, you know how it can be hard to find really good Genfic when you need it? Criminal Minds fandom, I'm looking at you in particular, but Torchwood, you've got nothing to be proud of. Anyway, apparently someone else feels the same, because prompts are now being taken for a Gen battle, along the lines of the regular Porm battles. Woot! Prompts are open until the 11th, posting opens on the 14th and the battle closes on the 28th. Loads of time!

Rules are here, leave prompts here and do give it a shout on your journal for any Genficcers. And if you don't normally write Gen, why not give it a go? The more fandoms, the merrier!

The world outside my office window is white this morning. It's very pretty from here. It was less fun doing my funky penguin walk through it on the way to work. If it doesn't clear up by lunchtime, no way on earth am I going to Witney tonight (I have Slimming World there on Monday evenings). I'm going home to hot chocolate and my lamb casserole instead.

How was everyone's weekend? Uneventful? Exciting? I spent it cooking, cleaning, then on a 6 mile walk round Port Meadow in the sunshine. Of course, it was freezing cold as well, but it was good to get some sun, especially since the sky is grey all the way down to the horizon this morning.

In case you don't have much going on (everyone's suspiciously quiet at the moment), allow me to find you thinks to occupy your time:

We've got some great authors this year - some old friends, some new but well-known names - and I'd love to see you all there. Trust me, 20,000 words fly by when you get going. We're also going to need some stellar artists to keep up with our writers, so please think about putting your name down for that as well.

This is a 14 day fest for posting fic, recs or artwork about the wonderful women in fandom. So far, my favourite post is this icon one, and I'm thinking of contributing the odd ficlet myself. Do go join in - all lengths, all ratings, all fandoms are more than welcome.

I loved this last year, and turned out what I think is one of the best stories I've ever written for it. The way the prompting works is also really cool, and even if you don't usually write Gen, do have a think about it. You never know what you can do until you try!

I think that's something for everyone. Beating the winter blues, one ficathon at a time :)

Yeah, yeah, I know you guys in the US have had a lot of voting lately, but this will make a difference to a number of SGA authors and every vote counts! ;)

Photobucket

There are 23 stories, all which create an OC and describe an H/C situation. All in 500 words. They're all linked from THIS POST, which is also where you cast your vote.

One of the positive things about this challenge is that people *have* to give a reason for why they voted one way or another, or the vote doesn't count. Comments can also be left on individual stories, but the votes have to be given for a reason. As with anything that involves...er...well, people, the results are a bit hit and miss, but in general, it's been good.

This was a hard challenge, trust me on this one, and there are some really imaginative responses. I've already voted, but it doesn't actually finish until next Monday, 10th November, you've got plenty of time.

Most of all, enjoy!

I am currently working on taking full advantage of the free webspace the university gives me to create a website for my fanfic. Except the way you upload files has changed, and I'm now supposed to use a special SFTP and download a program onto my computer and learn how to use it and seriously, the instructions make it look like rocket science, even if it isn't. *sigh* I will do battle with it at some point, but that's going to have to wait until my brain feels like learning something new.

To help it along, I've signed up for [livejournal.com profile] gateverse_remix, and heartily encourage anyone else who's eligible to do so – you need to have written at least 5 Stargate universe stories of 1000 words or more. ExpandMore ficly ramblings )

My posting has been a bit grumbly lately – lots of moaning and complaining and down-ness – and I've been terrible about commenting, which means I haven't been chatting to people like usual. I feel like I haven't spoken to some of you in months, although LJ has its own space/time continuum, so it was probably actually just a couple of days. Still. *waves to everyone* How you doing? I'm still pretty down most of the time, but I know why and am doing stuff about it. It doesn't solve the problem, not yet, but at least I don't feel like I'm taking it lying down.

Thanks for all the offers of fic last night! I have a list of about 12 stories now, that should keep me going for a while.

Also last night, I went to see "Singin' in the Rain". At the cinema! The Times are running a series of offers, where you can get 2 tickets for £5 to see a classic film. They recently published their list of 100 greatest movies, and have chosen about 10 that they consider to be landmarks in film-making. They show for one night only, and if last night is anything to go by, there are lots and lots of tickets available!

ExpandCut because I got SO carried away )

I now have the urge to replace ALL my icons with classic film ones. I shall probably resist.

Probably.

Ok, so I have possibly taken leave of my senses at this point, but once I get an idea, I find it hard to let go. After the profusion of excellent drabbles recently, I speculated if it was possible to get the word count down to 50 per drabble. Then I had the idea of combining it with the shopping list challenge. The below is the result. I blame the painkillers I had to take this morning....
