jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Writing - Will write for coffee)
[personal profile] jadesfire
Since I didn't get around to a fic-round up in January, this list covers both months. Not that there's much here. 6 stories, c.5,400 words

I wrote 4 ficlets for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon. This was intended to be a whole series, with 14 women, one for each day of the fest. I still have my notes, so the rest may appear at some point, probably with a series title that has something to do with cookies :)

CTU
Criminal Minds/Jordan Todd
490 words/Gen
Everything is just how she left it

Home
SGA/Teyla
630 words/Gen
Coming back to her people has not been coming home

Domestic
Doctor Who/Martha Jones
470 words/Gen
Martha Jones. Defender of the Earth.

What Ails You
Torchwood/Tosh & Gwen
814 words/Gen
Four weeks. Still no sign.

These days, I tend to count anything under about 5k as a ficlet - either my ideas are getting bigger or I'm getting more verbose. Although I don't think the latter is possible, I'm still going to count short fics like these two as ficlets. They feel more like the illustration of an idea than a fully-fledged story, and I love writing them.

Tilting at Windmills
Criminal Minds/Reid & Morgan
1700 words/Gen
We've been using gunpowder as a propellant to kill each other for over nine centuries. I guess I'm just the latest inheritor of a long tradition.

Evaluation
Criminal Minds/Prentiss & Hotch
1300 words/Gen
Bruises fade.
Written for the Gen Battle. It possibly also wins an award for my shortest summary ever.

Also, since I'm trying to get back into a writing frame of mind, a meme seen all over, but nicked specifically from [livejournal.com profile] szm

Post a single sentence from each WIP you have (or as many as you want to pick). No context, no explanations. No more than one sentence.

Despite always saying that I don't do WsIP, I did find lots of notes lying around, so some quotes are from them (including a co-written one - hope you don't mind, [livejournal.com profile] perspi!). The rest are from stories I plan to write, so are what a sentence from them would look like if I'd written them already.

1. "I said I couldn't leave this galaxy until every last Wraith was dead. Did you think I'd forgotten?"

2. She watched the odd curl of his fingers, his touch as careful and precise on the computer screen as it had always been with paper and pen.

3. John leaned on the rail, straining his eyes against the glare and watching until The Jumper became a mere speck, then disappeared over the horizon.

4. "If all else fails, we could always use him as a beacon to guide the jumpers in."

5. It looked open and enticing, the sunlight streaming down on him, inviting him up and up and up.

6. Jack is still watching her carefully, and when she's finished drinking, he takes the glass and sips from it before reaching out and pressing it to the back of her neck.

7. Because if you took down one of Sheppard's people – or Sheppard himself – there was no way you were going to walk away again.

8. The irony was, of course, that you had the same chance of dying with the first shot as you did of surviving to the fifth.

9. Jack looked up, keeping his voice even and casual as he said, "But you're not going to make that promise to me, are you?"

10. "I prefer to think of it as the application of scientific principles to the ultimate chaotic system: the brain."

Ooh, what lovely morsels to dangle before us! :) No. 4 looks particularly intriguing, but I have a strange fondness for stories where people get painted weird colors or temporarily glow in the dark.

*g* I have a weakness for that kind of thing myself - hence recording Nightdog's 'Can I get there by candlelight' because it was just so pretty in my head.

I fear I may end up being sued for false advertising when everyone sees the stories, but I'm having fun anyway :)

I'm a little confused; if anything under 5k is a ficlet, and those are between 1000 and 2000, what would you normally call them? The only categories I know are drabble, ficlet and fic.

(Will comment on the rest later! Shinies!)

*g* I didn't say it made sense! Who says it has to make sense?? ;) I think they're all ficlets, it's just that some ficlets are more equal longer than others.

*wrinkles nose* Nah, that doesn't make sense either. I think what's at the root of it is that I don't consider the stories above, which are words wrapped round a character moment, to really be *stories*. Stories/Fics have plot or adventures or dragons or something ;)

The whole thing's more of a continuiniunimumum than just categories, in my head at least. Hence the not making much sense... :D

Dragons! *squees*

Speaking of continuniumum, another word I can't stop spelling? Queueueue. *glares at Netflix*

(No, that's all I got. Too early for coherency yet. But I do want to know who's glowing in the dark, and why.)

Phenomemonemonon is the other one that gets me ;)

*g* I really like that line, because it could mean anything of 100 things and NO ONE (apart from one person) will know what it is yet :) Hopefully we can get it finished at some point.

And yes, my [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang story will have a dragon in it. Stories have to have dragons in them. It's like, a law, or something...

Oh, I see, it's not just a matter of length, but of content. I think we need more names! By your quantity category, I just realized, I've only ever written... maybe three full-length fics? But some of the under-5000 ones have had plot and action and functioned rather like an episode of TV. Donutsweeper and I were talking about this briefly yesterday - I said my ice dragon story was "simple" because it didn't really have a plot, it was just a fluffy moment (day), basically. I just wanted to describe an experience.

What about the word "vignette"? Would that work better for the pieces that are words wrapped around a character moment (or something else non-plotty)?

Okay, I said I'd be back. I can read "Tilting at Windmills" now, can't I?

I love your cookie series, and I'd love to see more if you even decide to work up those notes. :)

#6 - have you posted this as part of a WIP meme before? The image of Jack pressing a cold glass to the back of a woman's neck is *so* familiar. I love it.

*nods* That should be okay, along with "Over the Wine" which is old, but I'm still not embarrassed by (link from sidebar list :))

*giggle* You recognise the line because I'm fairly sure you've read the WIP! It's an ancient Torchwood thing that I've just lacked the inspiration to write so let some of you read. That's definitely one I want to get finished.

Oh, I just realized I wrote "if you even decide" (to write the rest of the stories) which is a lot different from "if you ever decide," which I intended. Sorry!

Glad I'm not crazy or plagued with false deja vu with #6! It's a nice one.
