There's been a WIP meme going round, and since I actually have some at the moment, I felt the need to share.

Also, I'm considering signing up to RemixRedux this year, just to see what happens. I wasn't going to do any challenges this year, and write just for me instead, but it turns out I suck at that, so I'm back to my deadlines/fear approach that has served me well in the past ;)

No context to these, just snippets of stuff that I may or may not finish. Some of these have been loitering in development hell for at least 18 months (so turned up in the last WIP meme), but maybe putting them down here will help me to either get moving on them or finally give them up as a lost cause.

ExpandFour fandoms, and I'll leave it to you to work out which is which )

...okay so there are more there than I realised, and in the back of my notebook, I also have a Sapphire and Steel story with a mcguffin that I'm too proud of to abandon, then there's a collaborative fic that I'd love to find time for again. Then there's the [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang, [livejournal.com profile] atlantisbigbang and [livejournal.com profile] whitecollar_bb, none of which are started yet. The latter is only a 10k limit, and with the plot bunny that came with one of these WsIP, that should be more than do-able.

*whimpers*

Anyone have a brain they could lend me?
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Default)
You guys are a)brilliant and b)nuts. You did know I'd be reading what you wrote, right? ;D Despite your best efforts, none of you managed to actually break the form (no, not even with your essay, Fish ;)) and the results are showing up beautifully. I'm having geekgasms over how easy Google have made it to create these things and get the answers out. Googledocs->Create New->Form. That's it. I'd totally recommend it for ficathons and similar - it'll save hours of typing! \o/

I've been prodding at words and ideas for a few days, but nothing's really sticking, so I think I need some help. Reading my old stuff both helped and hindered. Helped because hey, I used to be able to turn out a not-too-shabby story or two. Hindered because hey, am I ever going to be able to do that again? It's feeling less and less likely as time goes on. I have some prompts owed from a meme a while back, but nothing's working right now on those. So, as ever, I'm turning to the trusty Timestamp meme:

Give me one of my own stories, and a timestamp sometime in the future after the end of the story, or sometime in the past before the story started, and I'll write you at least a hundred words of what happened then, whether it's five minutes before the story started or ten years in the future.

Yes, I did used to write fic, remember? It feels like a long time ago now. Most of it is here or on my fic tag. If you *really* want to help, I could use Torchwood, Doctor Who, Criminal Minds or Jack (including Sic Transit Tempus) requests, but I'm open to all suggestions!

I'll take the first ten and see what I can do with them. Thanks, guys!

I actually slept last night, deeply and properly for the first time in I-don't-know-how-long. It makes a staggering difference, and I am therefore obnoxiously cheerful. Seriously, it's horrible, but I don't care XD

On the other hand, I opened up my flist to find that just as I'm having a good day, everyone else seems to be being hit by life, and hit hard. Apparently 2009 didn't get the memo that it's supposed to be better than 2008, not worse. I am currently looking for someone to write to to complain.

Because of this, I don't think my usual "HOW ARE YOU AWESOME??" meme is quite going to cut the mustard* this morning. So I propose this meme instead, nicked from [livejournal.com profile] apiphile (er...hope that's okay *smiles winningly*) from a while back:

ORGY OF EGO-BOOSTING!

Here's your side of the deal, you comment and tell me:

1x AWESOME thing about me.
2x AWESOME things about you. (That's right. TWO)
3x AWESOME things about a friend of yours, on or offline. I don't have to know who they are, just tell me.

Here's my side of the deal! I will reply with two AWESOME things about you. If I don't know you very well, I will make something up, post a picture of a baby animal, or write you a poem. drabble (seriously, no one wants me to attempt poetry, it's painful for all concerned)

Come and play! And if you know someone in comments, or even if you don't, remind them how awesome they are too. It's always a free-for-all around here, but this time, I'm making it an official free-for-all.

See, I told you. Utterly, obnoxiously cheerful and with no intention of stopping :P

*I'm British, I can get away with phrases like that and keep a straight face. Mostly
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Default)
I woke up feeling like absolute death warmed over, so you might spare a thought for [livejournal.com profile] miss_zedem, trying to get some sense out of me today. Yesterday turned out well after all, largely helped by the humungous blanket fort that we built, so I fully intend to carry all those cushions and pillows around with me so that Z and I can huddle in a corner somewhere with tea, cake and fic.

In the meantime, hope everyone has a good Friday *waves* And that you all pick up this meme (gakked from [livejournal.com profile] perspi) so that I can tell you how awesome you are:

the I think it's awesome that you are/do/have meme
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Default)
It's possible that I had things to tell you, but I'm having an up-and-down day and can't seem to string two thoughts together. So instead of actual content, I thought I'd dig up an oldie but a goodie. Last seen at [livejournal.com profile] karaokegal's.

The Stump the Author Meme

A) Go to my fics (fandom tagged accordingly), and pick out a line or three from one of my stories. (Must be a full line, please — no sentence fragments or speech tags or other such nonsense.)

B) I will respond with which story of mine I think it's from.

C) A drabble (ficlet) to anyone who stumps me.

Anyone who wins a ficlet (and with my memory, that's not hard), I'll use your prompt for a [livejournal.com profile] cliche_bingo square. My card is here, so feel free to suggest a specific cliche as well as a prompt word.

All my fic is here, and the list is even reasonably up to date. That doesn't happen very often...

And now, a meme! And if I can get my act together later, a commentary/set of notes on my Big Bang process, that doesn't just consist of flailing.

Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your LJ and explain what they mean to you. (Please note: If you simply wish to comment on something I've said but don't want to participate in the meme, that is fine. I will only give you five words if you specifically comment you with 'Words!')

[livejournal.com profile] aeron_lanart gave me Oxford, libraries, Discworld, honest, diverse

ExpandMan, I sure can talk when I get going... )

And because there are new people out there, and some I don't know very well, I like the wording of this meme:

"The problem with Live Journal is that we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. Hence, I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don’t know about you."

Fandom meme picked up yesterday from [livejournal.com profile] donutsweeper

The rules are simple, if you're interested leave a comment and I'll LJ stalk you to find THREE FANDOMS you apparently love. And then you answer these questions about them!

1) What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2) Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3) Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
4) Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5) Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?

[livejournal.com profile] donutsweeper gave me Stargate: Atlantis, Criminal Minds and House. I'm going to go in chronological order, which is the reverse of these.

jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Text - deep need to complain)
Yes, I've moved onto Buffy quotes. My brain for them is better than for Round the Horne.

I'm honestly and seriously fed up with this now. I fell over again this morning, straightening up from a drawer. Every time I get up off the sofa and go anywhere, I see stars for a moment and my knees wibble. DO NOT WANT.

Hurrumph.

I am comforting myself with my flist and old NCIS episodes, but I am bored and stressing about work (I have stuff to do! Doesn't my body know that?) and failing to get anything written which makes me grouchy. Grouchier.

Hurrrrrrrrrrrumph.

I know I haven't written anything in ages, but just in case anyone remembers that I used to....

Meme picked up most recently from [livejournal.com profile] topaz_eyes:
Ask me a question about one of my fanfictions. It can be absolutely anything in any fic and I will tell you the honest-to-god answer. Don’t hold back. Ask about major upcoming plot points if you want to. Whatever you ask, I have to answer truthfully.

And yes, 'will you ever finish anything ever again' is a reasonable question. Most of my fic is linked from the sidebar, but I'm working on a list that actually includes everything. Right now, my total stands at around 426,000, not including unfinished pieces. That's not too bad for 3 years' work, is it?

Right. Back to the pirates. \o?
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (SGA - Shep wavey hands)
Since it's now been over a fortnight since I really sat down and wrote something, I'm thinking that I need to kickstart my brain a little. The lack of writing is probably precipitated by taking on new material, but I also feel the need to get some words in some kind of pleasing order, so. A meme picked up from [livejournal.com profile] seperis's journal (adapted to suit my flist):

You post a topic, list, category, whatever, in my comments section. (examples: "Five Things James Wilson Remembers About His Childhood", or "Five colours the Torchwood Hub was painted" or "Five Things Teyla Will Never, Ever Tell Kanaan"). Then, in a separate post, I'll post the answers to your Top 5 ideas, according to me. Serious or fun!

I'll tackle this for: SGA, New Who, Torchwood, Criminal Minds, Discworld, Sapphire and Steel, Numb3rs and (oh, go on then) Supernatural. Please bear in mind that for the last one, I'm only 15 episodes in and keep it nice and general. Ta muchly

ETA: Er...guys...I know you love me and all, but 1 or 2 requests each, kaithanx? My brain can only take so much :D

Today, not only am I awesome for trying to get my writing brain going again *points upwards* but...er...

...

D'you know, for the first time, I can't think of anything. Um. Well, this is awkward. Seriously, I got nothing here.

*whistles*

Come on then, folks. Give me prompts so I can demonstrate my awesome writing-fu and tell me why you're awesome, so I can bask in vicarious awesomosity (yes, it's a word, I just made it up :P)
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Writing - Will write for coffee)
Since I didn't get around to a fic-round up in January, this list covers both months. Not that there's much here. 6 stories, c.5,400 words

ExpandBut the stories do cover 4 fandoms )

Also, since I'm trying to get back into a writing frame of mind, a meme seen all over, but nicked specifically from [livejournal.com profile] szm

Post a single sentence from each WIP you have (or as many as you want to pick). No context, no explanations. No more than one sentence.

Despite always saying that I don't do WsIP, I did find lots of notes lying around, so some quotes are from them (including a co-written one - hope you don't mind, [livejournal.com profile] perspi!). The rest are from stories I plan to write, so are what a sentence from them would look like if I'd written them already.

I'm still umming over making any actual nominations for this (how do I choose between you!?!) but it made me smile and figured it might do the same for you:

Fandom of Stars

The idea is to nominate people rather than their works, and is a lovely idea. I hope to have time for it soon!

On to the ficly stuff!

#1. I've had the grand total of two recs to take with me to Morocco. Now, I know you folks read more than that, so if you've seen anything at [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang, [livejournal.com profile] sgabigbang or [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa that you loved, I'd appreciate the pointer! Audiofic recs would also be appreciated.

#2. My 2008 fic list is here. It's backdated* because it turned into a ridiculously long trundle through the year, with snippets and thoughts that I couldn't resist putting in there. So just a few stats for you instead:

*ETA: And updated, since I discovered that I'd missed 2 SGA fics!

Total number of stories: 48
Longest story: Resonance (45,916; SGA)
Shortest story: Research (100; SGA)
Total number of words: ~207,730
Average (mean) story length: 4348 words (the median is somewhere around 1700)
Numbers by Fandom: 21 Stargate: Atlantis, 12 Torchwood, 8 Jack Harkness, 4 Doctor Who, 3 others and a partidge in a pear tree

#3. The New Year Fic Meme Expandokay, so I'm running a little late... )

#4. My WiP/fic agenda for 2009: ExpandAmbitious but achievable, I hope )
Anything else that I've talked about? I occasionally post mad-cap ideas or mention things in passing. If anyone actually remembers any of them, please let me know. Do I owe anyone anything? I'm sure I've forgotten something...

One of my resolutions for 2009 is to participate in fewer challenges. I've just got so much of my own that keeps getting pushed onto the back-burner by things I sign up for. If 2008 was about discovering my own voice, 2009 is about exploring it. I want to write more drabbles, take more flist prompts and generally dig a little deeper. My first LJ fic was posted 18th July 2006, and I feel like I spent the first year learning the mechanics of writing, the second year learning how to write like me, and I'm spending the third settling into it and just writing. It's a good feeling.

#5. [livejournal.com profile] bironic!!! I owe you a fic! Leave me a prompt (or, you know, request a WiP ;)) and I'll get right on it.

#6. I just had a dig through very, very old posts and stumbled across 2 original fics that I remember liking at the time. Both are what I think of as 'life sideways' stories, in that they're not quite fantasy, but there's no way they're the real world either. They're definitely candidates for polishing and doing something with - I'm so very much better at editing than the putting words on a blank page part of writing, that this is an easy way in.

*looks round* I think that's everything.

*pause*

I'd better get writing then, hadn't I?

ETA: Unrelated to fic in any way, I have my first Slimming World group of the new year tonight. Before Christmas, there were rumours of a new eating plan, and I've just looked it up on the website. It's called "Extra Easy" and...well. It does look it. Potentially much less confusing than the whole Original/Green split that experienced members do on instinct and utterly baffles newcomers, and much more of a plain and simple "these foods are healthy" eating plan. Should be interesting to see what happens later...
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Winter - Snowy dog)
No mouse sightings for 48 hours, so I think we got the blighter, and I'm starting to settle down a little. It'll be nice to go back to work for a rest. Of course, one of the first things I plan to do is print out all the fic I want to read so I've got plenty of material for Morocco (I'm also taking Cryptonomicon, The Music of the Primes and [livejournal.com profile] apiphile's Pass the Parcel, for variety's sake). My current plan is to go through [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang, [livejournal.com profile] sgabigbang and [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa and pick up everything I want to read. I'd love to do Yuletide as well, but I think there's enough there to keep me busy for a while. If you're on my flist, I'm reading it (so ner) but does anyone have any other recs for me? I'm going to have lots of time for a change and intend to make the most of it!

My fic list for 2008 is still a WiP and I also have a WiP list that itself is a WiP, along with all the stories that I keep under the heading (I kid you not) "Twinkles in the Writer's Eye". So while I'm doing that, can I recommend the following meme to the rest of you? I had to skip to page 6 of comments to find a fandom I'd heard of, but I have dome *some* reading this year and would love to give you all a Start Of Year Ego Boost.

the fanficcers love meme, continued

Right. I'm off to sort out stuff so that the flat looks more like a liveable environment than the victim of a mouse-hunt. Hope everyone's having a good Sunday and that work isn't too awful for thems that starts again tomorrow.

jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Cute - pug - worn out)
[livejournal.com profile] bironic, I think 'blears' may be the most useful word in the history of neologisms... It's certainly accurate for my present state.

So. I was thinking. Or at least, trying to think. When I have a cold, I take Day Nurse, which I normally swear by as a miracle cure. If it's working this time, then all I can say is that I'm a *LOT* more ill than I thought I was. But most families/people have their own patented cold remedies - any offers? Preferably not involving alcohol, sorry, since I'm only just venturing out of the world of soft drinks at the age of 27, and therefore have the tolerance of a 4 year old.

If you can't think of anything, I also gakked a meme from [livejournal.com profile] white_hart:

What has surprised you the most about me (if anything) since beginning to read my lj? Was anything completely unexpected or have I always fit the picture of me you have in your head?

Post this in your own journal (NB if you like, no obligation) and see how you have surprised people.

It's my last day in my current job today, and so I'm feeling all nostalgic. Thus:

1. Add a comment on my blog, leave one memory that you and I had together. It doesn't matter if you knew me a little or a lot.

2. Next, re-post these instructions on your blog and see how many people leave a memory about you. It’s actually pretty funny to see the responses. If you leave a memory about me, I’ll assume you’re playing the game and I’ll come to your blog and leave one about you.

[gakked from [livejournal.com profile] hllangel]

Do drop in and say hi, even if we don't chat much - maybe if you don't have a memory, say hi if you haven't done so yet. I can see you lurking out there ;) I'd love to meet you properly!
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Writing - Mike swallowing books)
I'm watching a madman. He's reporting from the levee on the Mississippi at Baton Rouge. OUTSIDE. Seriously, standing on the edge of the levee, trying not to get blown off, talking about people sheltering in their homes to ride out the storm. Shouldn't he be, oh I don't know, sheltering to ride it out? *shakes head* I know that power's out, so we can't expect to hear from folks yet, but stay safe, 'kay. [livejournal.com profile] travels_in_time, I'm thinking firm vertical thoughts for those trees...

I feel like I'm a long way outside the Doctor Who/Torchwood fandom at the moment (SGA folks have been good to me and made me very welcome *gets comfortable*) so I'm watching [livejournal.com profile] apiphile's Whoniverse love meme to pick up the good stuff. Don't let me down, people.

I just updated my audiofic page, since I only have one actual story in my monthly round up, and I only posted that the other day. All the audioficis available from [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur's incredible archive anyway, but I like having my own list too. Then I did the maths and there's 12 and a half hours of fic there. Twelve and a half! Not much SGA right now, but I'm working on it. I hope to hit 24 hours by the end of the year!

ExpandWhile I'm here, I've been thinking about podficcing lately... )

Ooh, and there's now a permanent link to "A World Called Catastrophe", which you should read even if you don't listen to podfic. Just remember the tissues. Or download it from here
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Writing - Working not writing)
I've written the first of my fic commentaries, and oh good grief, this could get addictive. It's annoying, but I tend to be so much more interested in the process and background to writing than the actual writing itself. This is a hindrance when you've got a 'to do' fic-list as long as your computer screen is high...

Anyway, the first commentary is on my Jack Harkness story Snookered [links to original] and can be found here [links to commentary]

Also, because I keep forgetting to mention it, [livejournal.com profile] hllangel is holding an all-fandom reccing meme. Great idea - go support it! I'm still thinking about what I want to rec, but it's going to be a terrific list when it's done.

I was at a funeral this morning, so my desire to write chirpy, happy posts about the perils of moving house and the annoyingness of not having broadband at home has somewhat diminished.

But I need to do something positive, so have a meme, nicked off [livejournal.com profile] kristen999

List one, three, or five of your favorite stories that you have written and why they are your favorite.
