Four more Five Things

And you thought I'd forgotten about these. :P A Whoniverse set this time, with thanks to the prompters. I think I'm going to attempt the SGA and Criminal Minds ones next, but first I have to go descale the kettle.

Yup. My life really is that exciting...

Five Things Donna Wishes The Doctor Had Never Told Her

1.That the TARDIS corridors potentially contained every room from every planet, anywhere, ever, because she wasted a month looking for the Haagen Daaz cafe and a decent hairdresser's.

2. That the strange purple stuff she'd just eaten were the entrails of a wasp-like insect and that they would give her immunity to the common cold. What she actually wishes is that he'd told her that before they left the restaurant because she would have had a second helping.

3. That the Nacree greet each other by French kissing. She might not have believed the truth, but at least she would have been warned.

4. That the incredible light show visible from the Yerilior peninsular was the death of a galaxy, millions of light years away. Somehow, knowing that billions of people were dying took the edge off the beauty.

5. That male seahorses were the ones that get pregnant, because that was just plain weird.

Five planets the Doctor will never, ever visit

1. Tyrlop. Seventh planet in the Erdine solar system. It's not that he minds talking to beings whose heads face backwards, and he had a fascinating game of Mahjong with a Tyrlopi on the Reedar space station, it's just that a whole planet of them might leave him with the feeling he's going the wrong way and severe neck-strain.

2. Grandile Seven. Or possibly Grandile Eight. Since he can't remember which one it is he's not supposed to set foot on again, he finds it safer to just miss both out.

3. H. Which isn't actually the name of the planet, but it's the closest he can get to it. Since his companions' attempts to pronounce it are both hilarious and extraordinarily profane, he's never included it on the tour of the galaxy.

4. Yulp Trilo. Two words: balloon animals.

5. Earth. Or at least that's what he tells himself, every time.

Five things Martha Jones wonders about
Drabbles

1. Whether it's worth it. Seven years of training, more exams than she cares to think about and so close to qualifying, and she still ends up on the phone to her little sister at three a.m. talking about Tish's latest love-life disaster. Martha's sure there's more to life than this, and she thought she'd find in her career, in helping make people better. But there's still paperwork, people crying on her shoulder and enough yelling to make her head spin. All she can hope is that at some point, it's all going to come together and be worth it.

2. Why she still wants this. The Doctor almost died in Elizabethan London, and she came pretty close herself on New New Earth. It's not like she can claim that it's been an easy ride, and she's under no illusions that it will be different if she stays. But with the Doctor taking her home, glancing at her over the console as he presses buttons and flicks switches, she knows that she doesn't want to leave. Not yet. She wants to stay with every fibre of her being, and not just for him. She wants this. She just doesn't know why.

3. If she's going to make it. She's so tired, and the sleeping back isn't really keeping out the chill. If she's going to make it all the way across Canada as well, she'll need something better, warmer. It takes her another moment to find the notebook buried at the bottom of her rucksack, and her fingers are so cold she can hardly get it open. Fighting the pain in every knuckle, she carefully crosses out the previous number and writes a new one. Two hundred and eight days down. One hundred and fifty-seven to go. If she makes it.

4. Whether she should have stayed. Not that she could have left with the Doctor after everything, not with her family needing her like this. But she can't deny the knot in her stomach as the TARDIS disappears. When she made her decision, she hadn't expected it to feel so final. In the living room, she can hear her mother starting to cry again, and she wonders if it will ever stop, if she'll ever be able to make it stop. And while she's sure she couldn't have left, she's starting to wonder if she's going to be able to stay.

5. If she should go to Cardiff. She's settled now, confident in her role and UNIT's task of protecting the planet. Although she knows that she's the best person to liaise with Torchwood, and that she doesn't want her research taken over by someone else, she's not sure she's ready for this. Seeing Jack is different to exchanging the occasional email, and however fond she became of him, she doesn't know how she's going to feel when she gets there, how many memories are going to be jarred by this project. But she supposes there's only one way to find out.

Five things Jack doesn't keep on his desk anymore

1. His diary. Not since Owen got the safe code from it. One Abbadon is enough for any lifetime, even Jack's. Besides, Ianto might think that turnabout is fair play, and there's no way Jack wants anyone seeing some of the notes he's made.

2. The 3D glasses that Torchwood recovered from a London television shop in the 1950s. The energy signature on them was a dead giveaway, but even Jack hasn't figured out what he's supposed to be looking at.

3. The picture of the team from Gwen and Rhys' wedding. He's moved it to the top of the filing cabinet, from where Tosh and Owen still smile down at him.

4. The picture of Gwen and Rhys from their wedding. It was probably mean of him to take it when they were still, er, comforting each other after the shock of the whole exploding alien thing. The bottom drawer is definitely a more appropriate location.

5. The coral he's been growing. It needs more space nowadays.

OH OH OH! My love for DW knows no bounds, and as I've said, I really only like gen fic for that fandom. And these, these are so perfect, they fit so wonderfully. I particularly loved the Jack and Martha segments, because imo the best move Martha ever made was going to UNIT, and Jack too often gets overlooked in favour of sex, so these snippets are a wonderful insight.
Also, I loved the coral! \o/ I can totally see him growing it!

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! *g* Most of my Jack-fic overlooks sex in favour of character, so I'm really glad these worked for you. And Martha rocks UNIT :)

Thanks :D

"descale the kettle"?

(Can't read fic right now, brain is on strike.)

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
(heh, no worries)

I was about to ask if you guys didn't get scale on your kettles, then I remembered that you don't use kettles. If you use one all the time to boil water, it gradually gets a layer of limescale on it from the water, so every so often you have to descale it. We bought a special descaling liquid, but I find vinegar works just as well :)

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of us use kettles. :) Mine is a normal metal one you boil on the stove; the electric ones are not very common, but not hard to find if you know what you're looking for. I keep one in my office. I think kettle usage isn't common enough that we need a word for things you do to maintain them. I'd never heard it until Lisa said it to Ianto, but I figured out what it was. I'm sure it would be hard to find descaling liquid here unless the stuff used in coffeemakers would work. (Most people I know use vinegar for that, too!)/kettle babble

Oh. Oh, those are all wonderful! I especially like the last of the Doctor's planets - funny and poignant at the same time.

Beta nitpick: I think you mean 'sleeping bag', not 'sleeping back' in the third Martha one.

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Glad you like yours :D Thanks!

*facepalm* Yeah, it's possible that's what I mean...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
oh these were all excellent, but Jack#3 just breaks my heart

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I think the Jack ones were my favourite - and were certainly the easiest - to write :)

[identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I really love these. The things no longer on Jack's desk were much more touching than I expected from the title :D

It was weird - I kept trying to make the 'Five Things...' ficlets funny, but I seem to default to serious at the moment. Glad you enjoyed, thanks :)

The Donna ones feel very Donna-y to me.

All I can say after reading #5 of the Doctor is: Oh, Doctor.

And Jack and the coral...

And I love the cat under a book icon.

loved that, they were all brilliant!

I love the progression in the Martha drabbles. And Planets #5, oh the ring of truth!

And the things not on Jack's desk. Lovely, touching, as I knew they would be. #4, oh Jack! :) And hooray coral!

Sorry I've taken so long to get round to reading these - I really liked the Donna and Jack ones.
