jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Writing - reading red book)

I'm still debating as to whether these should actually go in a different place, but since I can't face the thought of opening a 3rd blog right at this moment, they'll go here for now. My plan is to keep this primarily a fannish blog and shift my professional stuff somewhere else eventually but right now, that's possibly more blogging than I can handle.

The links are mostly for my reference, since I need to improve my professional awareness and because I'm genuinely interested in these things. If I put all the links here, I'll be able to find them when I need them. Or at least that's the theory.

From the New York Times: Hard times are seeing an increase in library usage and Artwork that's bringing Bronx children into libraries

500,000 books are to be made e-available through the Google Books project (but only for Sony readers, sorry :S)

Ongoing concerns about the Google Books settlement

Web 2.0 for the legal profession. The Common Sense approach to it - ie, do it if you want to and have time, don't if you don't. Similarly, Five Things Every Legal Practice Should Know About Web 2.0. Sensible, practical advice, and even more about integrating it into your business.

A (surely deliberately) provocative article about the merit of public libraries (ie free books for all!), including the wonderful statement "The internet, of course, where the entire world is increasingly available." I'll save the comments about useful information retrieval for another post.

A nice 'well duh' post about Why Web 2.0 projects fail

And some ones that you might like:

Considering what [livejournal.com profile] bironic's been asking about lately, this article about the 'free economy' on the web (although if anyone ever catches me using the word 'freemium' in every day speech, you have my permission to shoot me)

And for those of you in that part of the world, the San Francisco Public Library is holding an exhibition about the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence from March 20 to May 7.

OOOOOOOOH! Shiny. Shame it's only available for businesses right now...

I shall respond to your links with some links!

I don't know much about legal firms, but web 2.0 interest me. This post (http://synecdochic.livejournal.com/238398.html) talks about Web 2.0 in terms of livejournal and advertising, which is what got me interested in the concept originally. It's funny how much better web 2.0 sites work without shares or multiple owners.

On the 'ooh shiny', but also free, front, BBC news actually introuced me to Taskbar shuffle (http://nerdcave.webs.com/), which is one of those things that I've been cursing windows for not being able to do already.

*whistles* As usual, [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic's thinky thoughts blow me out of the water. She's dead on though. It's also interesting because we had our staff conference yesterday with a whole talk about Web 2.0 and brands on the internet. I do intend to post about it, once I've got my head around everything.

...yeah, that could take a while ;)

Hee - I have no idea what the widget does, but it's such a good feeling when you find one that's perfect for you. I might be addicted to Firefox add-ons, but they're just so useful!

Taskbar shuffle allows you to reorganise things on your menu bar on windows. It's really handy when you've got tons of things open but don't want windows to squash them into a single button.

*light dawns* Ahhh, I see! And that is definitely something I want :) Thanks!

They have a couple of those tables at the MIT Media Lab right now, and they are so cool. (They also have the vertical computer screen where you can wear gloves and manipulate items without touching anything, like Rodney had in that future-imperfect SGA episode, and which was apparently also in Minority Report.)

The table-thing sounds similar to something which was brought out for schools last year... no idea if the two are actually linked, and I only know about the school-based one because it was my husband who got the phone of "help, we've had this thing delivered and it's being launched to the press tomorrow, but we can't work out how to make it work. Get here now!"
...I'll see if I can ferret up a link

this is the product (http://www2.smarttech.com/st/en-US/Products/SMART+Table/default.htm), I can't find the news-thing, though it's probably been taken down as it was a video.

Hee. That does look like an educational version of the same thing - Microsoft have just turned into a general computer. M had something similar in the latest Bond film and oh good grief how much do I want one? ;)

Excellent news about the exhibit. My husband's brother was a Sister. He was also an artist and photographer, so it's possible that some of his work will be there.

I'm honestly not a big fan dividing up one's life into individual blogs. Just for me, obviously, I feel like my life and my fannish life and my writing and everything else can go in one place. (When I kept a written journal, I did it that way and to me LJ is just the computer equivalent of my notebook.)

Ooh, cool - will look forward to hearing about the exhibit if you get there.

For me, my LJ is a fannish space, which is very separate from my professional life. And my profession is moving increasingly into the blogosphere - if that's something I want to do, then this isn't an appropriate place for it, I don't think. People who wander in looking for fanfic are going to get reams of library advocacy posts, while librarians are going to have to wade through the fanfic to get at the serious stuff. The more library blogs I read, the more I think "I could do that", but I'm not sure I can do it all here. TBH, I'd probably move all the way to a different platform - blogger or wordpress - to keep the two things entirely separate. *shrugs* Might work, might not. We'll see what happens!

They're going to take some cleaning though!

Yay~! Reading this makes me feel all professional and... well. Interested in my own profession. Which is good! I don't know when I'll go back to working as a librarian, so I'm really glad you're keeping me up to date with what's going on. If you ever do move your work-related blog somewhere else, please do let me know where it goes, because it's fantastic to have. ♥
