At about 9.30 this morning, I developed a blind-spot and I mean that literally. For about 10 minutes, I simply couldn't see what was in the bottom right quarter of my field of vision. It was only when I also started to see flashing lights that I started to think maybe it wasn't eye-related but brain related. When I told a colleague, her immediate reaction was "you're getting a migraine. go home."

Judging by the pain in my head, she was right, although I'm getting off lightly, and it's bearable for the moment. And no, I don't intend to look at the screen for much longer. Even I'm not that daft. Well. Not quite. Probably.

So now I have a whole new exciting field to research - I like to know what's happening to me, especially when it involves brain cells, and if I'm going to get migraines, even mild ones, I want to be ready for it. Research skillz - I has them.

Assuming things done get worse, there will be fic later (thrilling, I know, but try to contain your excitement ;)) and some proof-reading of the [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang website. We go live tomorrow and still so much to do!

How's everyone doing? Do drop in to say hi. I'll be here all day, in between headaches...

Thanks! I seem to have mostly slept it off now, which is quite the relief, but I'm still going to take it easy for a while, just in case.

Woot indeed! Can't wait for tomorrow :D

It's tomorrow over here now! :P

But damn it, the site's going live at like... 5am on 25 June for me, and of course, my laptop has to die at this time, so I don't have the comfy option of reading long fics in bed. :(

Oh no, not migraines... *hugs* I hope it goes away soon enough.

Unsolicited Medical Advice: If you can find some riboflavin (also known as B-2 in some pharmacies), try taking 200 - 400 mg. (My mom seems to only take 200 mg, and is usually able to function a little later in the day, rather than spend it and the next day recovering.)

I seem to only have a mild case - blind spot and flashing light, but no worse a headache than I'm used to (I get them quite a lot which I've always blamed on too much time in front of the computer ;)) and I slept through most of it, so that's something.

I'll add B2 to my list, just in case! thanks :)

Welcome to the migraine club. There're some nice pictures on the sight phenomenom here (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Migr%C3%A4neaura#Migr.C3.A4neauren), though the text is German. Ironically, that's all my father gets - no headaches at all. So not fair...

Huh, those pictures are fascinating - the first one shows almost perfectly what I saw, as does the second one, except that for me, the lights and blurring were in the bottom right corner of my vision. It was disconcerting, to say the least!

Hopefully I'll always get off this lightly (paracetamol and a few hour's sleep), but I want to be ready if they get worse!

Migraines are ick. I always get the lights and the weird sight thing quite a while before the headache kicked in so am able to treat it before it incapacitates me.

What I would suggest is trying to go through the day and see if you can think of anything that might have been a trigger. While I used to get migraines from cheese in my teens (it's a family allergy thing) the #1 thing that triggers them now is failing fluorescent lights. Which is weird when you consider that strobe lights in clubs don't have the same effect.

Best treatment for me? Cool darkness and sleep.

The trigger's been baffling me, actually. It was only 9.30am, so I hadn't exactly been exposed to much. It's all bit weird, and I'm just grateful that it was no worse than the bad headaches I get sometimes.

Er. Yes, I did just read that sentence back and go 'doh' ;)

Thanks - the sleep has worked a treat and I'm doing much better now!

Well, touch wood (*slaps forehead*) it seems to have lightened off for now. Although the amount of laughing I'm doing at your choice of icon may just bring it on again. *cracks up*

Thanks :)

*offers to share her extra-dark chocolate and dark, quiet hidey-hole for migraines*

I'd say the pain's the least part of a migraine, that the other effects are far worse. Which, for me... sensitivities to light, sound, touch, and smell, brain-fog, can't regulate temperature quite as well, and sometimes nausea. Visual artifacts like bright little tiny specks that swim around in my field of vision are more aura, and they give way to nausea and extreme sensitivity to light and sound, as well as all the rest of it.

Chocolate (dark, 70% cocoa content or better) seems to help me, at least. And dark and quiet.

Oh gosh, I had it nowhere near that badly. Hopefully it'll stay that way, but I will arm myself with chocolate anyway (a cup of coffee and a few paracetamol seemed to me the world of good). You know. Just in case ;)

Thanks!

Not a problem. And I usually don't get all of the symptoms at once... those are just all the ones that I know have accompanied the migraine. The brain-fog, though, is the one constant. *makes a face* It's evil, very evil.

Pain killers are good, but they only take away the pain, not the rest, for me. Hence the chocolate. And caffeine is good, because it constricts blood vessels, which dilate during a migraine. Which causes the pain and at least some of the symptoms. Still haven't figured out what causes the brain-fog and how to get rid of it, though.

Wait, what?

I've had those on occasion ever since I was five years old. They're migraine-related? Or ... they can be? I'd never heard of that, and I don't get migraines. Interesting.

For me, they're migraine-related. I don't know if they are for other people, since I've never really asked if anyone else gets them before the migraine hits.

Yeah, any time something goes wonky with your vision, that's really, really frightening.

And speaking of wonky vision, I'm working on Oscar the Cat now. :-) I have the basic drawing in, and I think he's going to be much simpler than Chia! Short black fur FTW.

Would you like the moonlit background like I did for Deelaundry's kitty (in icon here), or any particular color?

Also, although tempted, I have not applied a piratey eye-patch to the bad eye. *g*

ETA that I am leaning toward a green-gold backdrop for Oscar, since his green-gold eyes are the only bright color on him. Although a mixed-blue backdrop would work well since I'll have plenty of blue highlights in his black coat. Thoughts?

*nodnodnod* I was looking at a piece of paper and literally couldn't see what was written in the bottom right-hand corner. It just...wasn't there. Seriously freeky.

Hee, Oscar was fluffy, but not *that* fluffy. And well done for resisting the eye-patch. Much appreciated :)

I'd prefer a plain background, I think, more like the one for Chia. Moons aren't really J's thing ;)

Woot!

ETA: I've only just seen your ETA! I'm happy to trust you on colour, since I have no instinct for it. Plain and simple would suit us better, but apart from that, I trust you!

Ah, migranes. Lovely things, they come in many varieties.

Quite a few people seem to have them triggered by dark chocolate. Could that be a factor?

Yeah, I do seem to be one of the lucky ones who gets them mildly!

Heh, all I had was porridge, so I don't think that's it. Coffee and paracetamol really really helped, so I'll keep my fingers crossed that they go on helping :)

Meant to say this earlier, but promise me that you'll mention this to your GP? I know you get headaches, but you've never had the blind-spot thing before, right? Just... get it checked out. Or there'll be trouble, missy. *tries to look stern*

Well, if nothing else, it's reminded me to get an optician's appointment (work pays \o/) But yes, it did occur to me that random sight-loss and flashing lights was probably something to mention to the doctor. Hopefully it's a one-off, though...

Hee! We both totally fail at stern *hugs back*
