Fandom meme picked up yesterday from [livejournal.com profile] donutsweeper

The rules are simple, if you're interested leave a comment and I'll LJ stalk you to find THREE FANDOMS you apparently love. And then you answer these questions about them!

1) What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2) Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3) Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
4) Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5) Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?

[livejournal.com profile] donutsweeper gave me Stargate: Atlantis, Criminal Minds and House. I'm going to go in chronological order, which is the reverse of these.

Dreamwidth

[Um, this is flattering myself but stuff turns up in unexpected places so just in case: this post mentions fandom but is really about me, so please no link to [livejournal.com profile] metafandom, thanks.]

I know I've spammed everyone today, and I promise to be quieter tomorow, but with Dreamwidth going into open beta* tonight, I wanted to get this posted.

*BETA=not everything will work. Join the getting_started comm if you're not sure what's a bug and what's working just not in the way you expected

It occurs to me that I haven't actually done anything with my Dreamwidth account since I got it, save importing my entries. To be honest, the closed beta has been a little too buggy for me, with my complete lack of technical know-how. Things I want to do, like changing the style of my journal, don't really work yet, and things like setting up a properly organised place for my fic, I haven't had time for.

ExpandCut because I know there's folk who really don't care although they're missing the Yes, Prime Minister quote. )

I do know I'm biased though, because although my main interaction is here on LJ, it's not necessarily the stuff that's the most personally significant. That would be the postcards I sent a bunch of you from Morocco, or the stuffed animals I get through the post, or the hand-drawn cards, or the care packages, or the flailing email when I'm struggling to write or the favours you do me or the private messages or the arrangements to meet up or the disappointment that we can't or the secret projects we work on to reveal to the world later. They're the things that make the strongest impact on me, and they're not LJ-dependant. LJ facilitates them, but if everything goes dark over here, I still know where a heck of a lot of you live.

Actually, thanks to Google street view? I can see your house from here ;)

With Dreamwidth rapidly hurtling towards reality, I've been doing a lot of mulling (read: staring out of the window chewing a pencil) about the way I thought I'd use my LJ and the way I actually do.

Since that bit's of no interest to anyone but me, I've also been thinking about Fannish Drift as a phenomomonemon*. I came to LJ for House-fic, stayed for Torchwood/Doctor Who/Jack, got hooked, lined and sinkered by SGA and am now watching my flist diversify into Merlin, Leverage, Psych, Due South and all kinds of other shows. ExpandCut for rambliness that never actually goes anywhere )

Apologies for spamming today but. Fannish folks, if you haven't read the following article, click the link below and have a look.

Dances with Penguins.

I didn't know [livejournal.com profile] tv_elf but as in all fannish circles, she was a friend of a friend. The article is about her, and all of us and encapsulates completely my experience of fandom.

As a demonstration of this, I picked up the link from [livejournal.com profile] cryptictac, having been directed there by [livejournal.com profile] topaz_eyes for

The Fandom Appreciation Meme: My Thread

Clicking the link will take you to my thread on the post, but take the time to scroll through all the comments. There are lots of people jumping in to share appreciation for folks they don't know, and for me, that's one of the real joys of fandom. I met a whole bunch of you through memes like this.

Go on. Have a click. You never know who might be out there.

I wouldn't normally do this, but I know my flist spans multiple fandoms and this one's running away with itself.

This post at stop_plagiarism has the full details but here's the short version:

If you see posts on any of your comms accusing someone called Spiletta or Spiletta42 of plagiarism, it is a troll.

The whole thing is terribly out of hand, and extremely vicious (posting of RL details has gone on as well) and mods are stamping on it as quickly as they can. BUT they have to know about it. Please direct them to the [livejournal.com profile] stop_plagiarism post for full details, and if the IP address of the poster can be noted, that would be useful too in tracking the troll for reporting to LJ Abuse.

The person responsible is using the usernames claireandelle1, furqueen[96] (not sure about the numbers) and kittyxpete.

So far, Stargate, Buffy, B5, Torchwood and Doctor Who comms have been hit. The mods at [livejournal.com profile] stop_plagiarism are trying to track everything down so that LJ Abuse can be informed, but the more information, the better.

Also, if you're a mod, check your comm! Most of mine are on moderated status anyway, but if you're not, please keep a close eye on it. What with the shoebox project getting hacked (DO NOT GO TO THE SITE THIS MEANS YOU*), and [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge and others getting attacked recently, it feels like fandom's adopted a siege mentality. Writers who have a higher profile than me (I'm looking at some of my House friends in particular here), please make sure everything's backed up, because these folks are nasty, and they're going after the popular writers.

Remember: You're not paranoid if they're actually out to get you.

*seriously, DO NOT GO TO THE SITE. If you do, run a spyware check IMMEDIATELY. Look after your computer!
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Text - The willing to share his feelings)
We have people coming for lunch, so I'm about to go chop vegetables, but I'm full of warm glowy feelings this morning so had to share.

My new audiofic obsession has so far only resulted in two recordings, which I expected to stick in [livejournal.com profile] tw_audiofic and have everyone forget about. Except [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur has provided them with a permanent home at her awesome podfic site. And [livejournal.com profile] cybel has turned both of them into podfics, and created cover art for 'Here With Me' for the purpose. She's also crossposted them to [livejournal.com profile] podslash for me, which I didn't even know existed.

Here's the thing - I've never so much as exchanged a comment with these guys before, and yet here they are, taking time and effort and hard disk space over something I've done. Because it's fandom, and that's what we do. It's like the world's biggest game of 'Pay it Forward' (and I haven't forgotten I still owe people stuff from that...). It never ceases to amaze and touch me what people are willing to do for one another. I'm going to hang onto this next time the shipping/bashing/whatever wars break out.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, the story links are below. What? It's my journal, I'm allowed to promote my own stuff ;) If anyone can tell me how to view the cover art of 'Here With Me' in iTunes, I'd be most grateful - my player's a Creative, so this is all a bit lost on me. I figured it out through my usual trick of pressing buttons until it worked! *beams*
