Eee! I love Orrery, and I love the way you read it here.

I felt it would suit my voice, so I'm really glad it did :) Although I cut the massive coughing fit from the end, which I feel was a wise decision...

Thanks!

I. I seriously, completely, utterly and totally can not describe how freaking awesome this is. It's. It's. It's my story only I can HEAR it and it's right and perfect and - yeah, I really can't describe it. I have no concrit. I have a whole lot of squee and love, and you've got a beautiful, clear, and wonderful voice. If I could hire you to read to my kids, I absolutely would. ...I'm still having a major squee high. Don't mind me.

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2008-03-19 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
*bounces happily* I'm soooooo pleased! I could hear it very clearly in my head, so I just hoped that what I was hearing was what you were hearing, if you see what I mean.

And squee away! I'm kind of excited about it myself! Even if, with the hankie over it, the microphone does look kind of like one of my grandmother's lamps...

Thanks!

You have a beautiful reading voice! And voice in general! You could make audio books for a living. And your accent! Eee, British :-)

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2008-03-19 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I love audiobooks, and listen to them all time, so I think some of that must have come through.

*grin* My accent's somewhere between RP English and North London - I noticed that some of the 'r's came out funny, and I don't always put the 't' on the end of words. That's not necessarily a problem it's just weird when you think you're saying them...

Thanks!

I really wish I could download at work, but I'll have to wait until I get home. I am aquiver with anticipation.

I have been thinking a LOT about the whole subject of podfic this week. I'd write a big long post, but I don't know who I would be writing it for. If I turn up somewhere in your journal with random thoughts sometime, that's why.

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2008-03-19 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I've enjoyed most of the podfic I've been listening to, although I've been quite critical and turned off ones where I didn't like the reader. I could listen to [livejournal.com profile] zoetrope, who reads a lot of SGA, all day, but others I can't get past the first sentence. It's not an accent thing, more to do with tone and inflection, I think.

Do turn up with random thoughts! The more random the better! :D

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I've listened!

You have a good voice. Good inflections. I thought it was excellent, and I'm quite critical, too. The best reading is when I forget the reader I'm listening to (which isn't always easy, since I teach speaking) and get immersed in the story, and that definitely happened here. I'll be thrilled if you record more.

I also listened to zoetrope reading "Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead," which I enjoyed very much; thank you for the recommendation!

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
oh yay! Hoorah! I'm so glad you enjoyed - I recorded and listened, recorded and listened, so I'm glad the hard work paid off :)

I could pretty much listen to zoetrope reading the phone book, so glad you enjoyed that too :D

Thank you!

I recorded and listened, recorded and listened

It did pay off! After you said that you got hoarse and had a coughing fit, I remembered that I was wondering if you recorded it straight through the final time, or if you used editing software after you were finished. I saw a reference somewhere to how you can just go back to the beginning of the paragraph if you mess up (instead of starting back from the beginning) and then snip it and paste it back together in editing, but I didn't know how advanced that type of thing is.

I have a digital audio recorder I love to play with and want to start using again, but it picks up a lot of background noise, so I probably need to find a microphone anyway. That's step one. Step two, deal with self-consciousness about my accent. :) In the (admittedly rather small) sampling I downloaded from jinjurly's site, I didn't find any American readers I liked. Have you run across any?

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I recorded straight through. It is possible to go back and rerecord, but I think it would probably sound messy with the software I've got - if the background noise doesn't match, or the tone doesn't quite match, I'd find it weird. Although if I record longer stories, they'll have to be in parts, because there's no way I can read for much longer than 20 minutes without a break.

It's a fairly simple programme called 'Audacity', which we downloaded from the internet, IIRC - one of those programmes that you can use very simply, or probably use very sophisticatedly. I go for the simple :) The only bits I delete are 'white noise' at the beginning and end.

I have to say that alot of the recordings I've loved have been by non-Americans. Dodificus is very good, as is samantharichter. I loved 'All these places we have met' which is read by thingswithwings, and she's read quite a few others. I started to listen to 'Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose, but didn't get on with the reader - it was a good reading, just not for me. Like you, I'm hypercritical about these things!

And don't be self-conscious - one of the things I love is that we all sound different. I think it's more about what's going on in your head when you're reading than what you actually sound like. *makes encouraging noises* ;)

Dang it, if I could just figure out which version of Linux my computer is running, I could install Audacity on it. Well, I've installed it on my mom's computer and I have a few days to play with it. I have a lot of audio I've recorded of family that I'd like to play around with and edit while I'm practicing my reading. I'm not sure I'll ever stop making myself cringe. I really am not self-conscious about my voice or my reading, and I love to read aloud and be read to, but audiobooks for others' consumption are a whole different level. I guess the key, which I'm understanding from you, may be practice and repetition. I won't try to judge myself by readers with other accents, but without a positive American example (not just "Oh, I don't want to do it like *that*), I'm not sure how to know if I like my own recording. ::shrug:: I'll work it out. :) Thanks, and I'm really enjoying reading about your journey through the process.

*pouts* No workie for me... I'm just getting a message that the file is temporarily unavailable, and the offer to find my ideal date in Sandridge o_O

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2008-03-19 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
*blinks* I don't even know where Sandridge is...

I have no explanation for that one - I just tried it and it works fine for me. Huh.

I'll...beat it with a big stick until it works *nods*

*goes to find stick*
