jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Random - Stone finger)
Below the cut is a vivid demonstration of why I should never, ever get bored.

A week ago, [livejournal.com profile] bironic wrote Thirteen Ways of Looking at Rodney, based on this poem by Wallace Stevens. For some reason, I decided it would be really great to translate them into Latin. No, even I haven't worked out why yet, but I'm quite pleased with the results.

I chose to translate them into Classical Latin, even though 'Ancient' in Stargate uses the various forms of Latin freely and interchangeably. Think of this as an early dialect.

Huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sepia_words, who untangled my grammar and made my adjectives agree with my nouns. There is a story to accompany these poems, here

This story is something of a labour of love, and has had input from some very generous people.

It started with [livejournal.com profile] bironic, who wrote Thirteen Ways of Looking at Rodney, based on these poems by Wallace Stevens. For reasons that are still not entirely clear, I decided it would be really fun to translate them into Latin. Except then I started thinking why would someone do that?. Someone who isn't me, I mean. And so the story below was born. I'm not sure if it's an expansion, a remix or a misuse of the original, but I had fun putting it together, and have learnt a lot along the way.

Huge thanks must go to:

[livejournal.com profile] bironic for writing the poems in the first place, and letting me play with them.
[livejournal.com profile] sepia_words who checked my grammar and made incredibly helpful suggestions for translation.
[livejournal.com profile] greyias who introduced me to the mysteries of Photoshop and then solved them for me.
[livejournal.com profile] donutsweeper who is always encouraging and stopped me drowning in commas.

All remaining deficiencies, howlers and logic-holes are my own.

*prods flist*

Anyone alive out there? It's all gone quiet... Well, apart from on the building site next door where it sounds like they're banging Thor's hammer against the scaffolding.

But the sun is shining, I got my Latin fic done, I cracked and bought myself 'real' coffee so I don't have to drink fairtrade instant any more (*shudder*), I'm reading some fun genfics over at [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon*, there is hope on the horizon, my Big Bang story is coalescing into something writable, and Virgin radio are playing "Two Princes" which makes me feel 16 again. (they've followed it up with an hour of awesome tunes *sings quietly to self while dancing in chair*) ETA: Ooh, also, I'm happy because we've belated realised that Hotel Babylon is brilliant and fun and something we both like, and has Lucy Saxon in! We're so going to have to find the first two series now.

What's making you happy today?

Also - people who have friended me lately, drop in and say hello! I have coffee (see above) and biscuits and would love to meet you properly :) Tell me something random about yourself. What's your favourite ice-cream flavour? What's the craziest colour you've ever dyed your hair? Crunchy or smooth peanut butter? Is the glass half-full or half-empty? Superman or Batman? And lots of other questions...

Geez...can you tell I'm bored?

*Go have a read! Author guessing is now open :D

...but just to say that I've posted 2 fics to [livejournal.com profile] amplificathon. It's taken me longer than I'd hoped, thanks to a severe case of nerves, for some reason.

They are:

One Door Closes by [livejournal.com profile] travels_in_time (Doctor Who, Jack; Gen)

Coffee With Lucifer (#7) by [livejournal.com profile] pwcorgirl (Torchwood, Jack; Gen)

Both links go to the [livejournal.com profile] amplificathon entries. More to follow!
