jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Writing - Mike swallowing books)

I'm watching a madman. He's reporting from the levee on the Mississippi at Baton Rouge. OUTSIDE. Seriously, standing on the edge of the levee, trying not to get blown off, talking about people sheltering in their homes to ride out the storm. Shouldn't he be, oh I don't know, sheltering to ride it out? *shakes head* I know that power's out, so we can't expect to hear from folks yet, but stay safe, 'kay. [livejournal.com profile] travels_in_time, I'm thinking firm vertical thoughts for those trees...

I feel like I'm a long way outside the Doctor Who/Torchwood fandom at the moment (SGA folks have been good to me and made me very welcome *gets comfortable*) so I'm watching [livejournal.com profile] apiphile's Whoniverse love meme to pick up the good stuff. Don't let me down, people.

I just updated my audiofic page, since I only have one actual story in my monthly round up, and I only posted that the other day. All the audioficis available from [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur's incredible archive anyway, but I like having my own list too. Then I did the maths and there's 12 and a half hours of fic there. Twelve and a half! Not much SGA right now, but I'm working on it. I hope to hit 24 hours by the end of the year!

I really, really love recording audiofic, which for me, has many of the same elements as singing. My ear for rhythm has always been better than my ear for tuning, so the speaking works really well for me, and I've realised that's what I'm listening for in other people's podfic. Over the last few weeks, I've listened to a random selection of readers, but my top five have to be zoetrope, dodificus, the_oscar_cat, villanny and rustydog, not so much for their accents (UK, AUS, UK, UK, US) but for the feel of their reading. They hit the rhythms spot on, the expression and the timing is just right in a way that I can feel rather than describe. Look them up on the audiofic archive.

But the rhythm thing causes problems. I've long believed that rhythm is as important in prose as in poetry (just listen to a really good orator to hear that) and reading these stories aloud has rammed it home even further. There are some stories that I've just not been able to read, because the author's internal rhythm doesn't match mine and I can't make them work with my speech patterns. I've also had to learn to time my breathing really carefully, because damn some of you lot write long sentences!

Overall though, I'm learning lots and having a blast. What more could I want?

Ooh, and there's now a permanent link to "A World Called Catastrophe", which you should read even if you don't listen to podfic. Just remember the tissues. Or download it from here

Check my journal for a bit of a hurricane update - wish it was more, sorry.

Those weatherdudes who stand out in the hurricanes? Crack me up. It's kind of a hysterical reaction, but I tend to develop a dark sense of humor in worrisome situations like this, and those insane forecasters are so mockable, it's like they do it just for me. *g*

I hadn't thought about that much until trying to read podfic, either. I've only read your stories and my own, so I haven't experienced much variety, but even then some stories are easier than others for me because of rhythm. And I still don't do as good a job with it as I'd like, but I agree - an ear for rhythm is important, and it's something I really like about your reading.

(I've found I'm harder on myself about podfic reading than almost anything else I do "creatively" - I'm not sure why - so it's really nice to know that mine have worked for you. Thanks. :) )

The update was great, thanks - knowing *something* is better than knowing *nothing*.

Heh, this guy did seem kind of nuts, standing out there and saying how dangerous it was. Yeah, so you're there because...

I think I'm fairly easy on myself with podficcing, thanks to years of singing lessons and concerts and stuff - I approach it the same way I used to approach them. Also, I've done so much of it now, that it's becoming a mixture of instinct and "oh, whatever"ness ;) I love your reading, because you catch the underlying feeling of the words, not just what's being said. It's probably horribly egotistical, but I love listening to 'Five Times...' in particular. It really cheered up my morning when my player cycled through to it again :D
