Fandom Meme
May. 26th, 2009 01:23 pmFandom meme picked up yesterday from
donutsweeper
The rules are simple, if you're interested leave a comment and I'll LJ stalk you to find THREE FANDOMS you apparently love. And then you answer these questions about them!
1) What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2) Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3) Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
4) Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5) Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?
donutsweeper gave me Stargate: Atlantis, Criminal Minds and House. I'm going to go in chronological order, which is the reverse of these.
HOUSE
1) What got you into this fandom in the first place?
The fic. I'd already discovered fanfic.net for X-men fic, so when I started watching House, I checked there for things to read. Getting mixed results, I started to Google and ended up on LJ. Then a prompt at
housefic_meta caught my eye, and I wrote a story for it. With some help from
topaz_eyes, I managed to get my first fic posted and away I went!
2) Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
This is kind of a weird one. In fannish terms, I've moved a long way on. But my House-friends are still on my flist, and I wouldn't change that for the world. So I'm still aware of the fandom, even if I'm not really a part of it any more.
3) Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
Hunting, Daddy's Boy, Love Hurts
4) Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
See #2 above.
5) Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?
...I'd have to leave that to people better qualified than me!
Criminal Minds
1) What got you into this fandom in the first place?
I always start with the show. My writing always spins off from canon, so not knowing the canon bugs me, and I can't enjoy the fic properly. Criminal Minds is...different to your average procedural, and it just sucked me in.
2) Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
Heh. I left and came back! With my usual huge initial enthusiasm, I set up
bau_inbox, then promptly got sucked into Torchwood (within about 6 weeks, I think). When there was no new Torchwood canon, I wandered back in and found the fandom was still there and going strong. Unless a new fandom eats my brain, I think I'm going to remain a multi-fandom dabbler for a while.
3) Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
LDSK, Seven Seconds, The Angel Maker
4) Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Well I'm committed to the Big Bang! And
aoibhe and I have the general comm on Dreamwidth to mod, so as I said above, I think I'll dabble for a while yet.
5) Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?
I'd like to see not just the volume but the variety of fic that other fandoms have. My impression is that the subject matter of CM puts people off writing episode-style fic, which is sad, and there's a distinct lack of the madder end of the spectrum, which is disappointing.
Stargate: Atlantis
1) What got you into this fandom in the first place?
miss_zedem. It's...pretty much that simple. I'd loved SG1 until S6, and had said I wouldn't have anything to do with Atlantis. But Z made it sound fun, so I started to watch a few episodes and got hooked on the characters.
2) Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
Season 5 put me off, more than a little, as does the overload of Sheppard/McKay fic, but in many ways, this is the fandom of my heart, in the way that Jack Harkness is the character of my heart, and I don't think I'll ever be able to fully leave it alone.
3) Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
The Return I&II, Tabula Rasa, Echoes, Adrift, The Defiant One
4) Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
This is one where I participate rather than needing to own comms, which is nice ;) I've written more SGA than any of my other fandoms, which is also due to the enthusiastic response that even the smallest story gets.
5) Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?
People are drifting away right now - many have jumped ship to Merlin, but most to new or old and much-love fandoms. I'm sort of waiting to see what happens, personally, but I can see it remaining a friendly fandom for newbies of all types. It's definitely a fandom big enough for everyone.

Date: 2009-05-26 04:03 pm (UTC)Haha... apparently I am, if the novel I just wrote up is anything to go by. Although it is a bit, hrm, blunt. I better let it sit a while before I post it.

Date: 2009-05-26 01:54 pm (UTC)I'm curious about Criminal Minds, but a little hesitant to get into something dark. Is it dark? How about canon - is it closed canon, and if so, is it the kind of closure that will leave me tearing my hair out?
Now come stalk me! ♥

Date: 2009-05-26 02:06 pm (UTC)1. SGA
2. One Piece
3. NCIS
Criminal Minds is an odd bird. I absolutely adore it, but yes, it gets very dark. In my head, CBS shows exist on a spectrum, with Criminal Minds at one end and NCIS at the other. The CSIs are more or less in the middle. So "The Mentalist" is slightly more towards NCIS, and "Numb3rs" even more so. "Without A Trace" is between CSI and Criminal Minds, if all that makes any kind of sense.
CM has just finished its 4th season, with a 5th commissioned. One thing I would say is that it tends not to indulge in the kind of FAIL you find in other shows (it is a procedural, but the cop of the week is often non-white/non-male, and half the team are female. There's an excellent essay about this here (http://synecdochic.livejournal.com/302710.html#cutid1))
One thing CM doesn't really do is closure. The characters tend to be rounded human beings, and there are rarely easy answers to anything. For a 10 episode taster, try:
~ Extreme Aggressor (the pilot)
~ LDSK
~ The Fisher King parts 1&2
~ Lessons Learned
~ The Big Game/Revelations
~ Jones
~ Seven Seconds
~ Penelope
They cover the major character arcs and moments, although personally I'd say just start with S1 and see how you get on! It's a brain-gripping series, rather than a heart-gripping one, but I absolutely love it [/over-enthusiasm]

Date: 2009-05-27 01:49 pm (UTC)And thank you so much for the lowdown on Criminal Minds! I feel a lot more informed now! And, uh, yeah. Between CSI and Without A Trace is pretty dark - I might give it a pass for right now, although it definitely looks like a really good show! I've just been watching too many procedurals lately - I don't know how much more "people doing bad things to each other" that I can take right now.
Still! It's on my list now!

Date: 2009-05-26 02:02 pm (UTC)As for the three of yours, I like House, enough to follow it, but not enough to seek out or write fic about it. I've read the occasional crossover though. Haven't seen much of either of the other two, though.

Date: 2009-05-26 06:10 pm (UTC)episode-style fic
I itsh to write it - I do not have enough words... & I *need* to write them investigate my murderer!
there's a distinct lack of the madder end of the spectrum
I'm not actually sure what you mean by that, *feels dim*
many have jumped ship to Merlin
Watching from a (kind of) distance I have noted that a lot of the people writing for Merlin now are the people who went to SGA from Smallville. And as my impressions of viewing the first episode of Merlin were:
it left me thinking of Smallville. [..] the red and the blue colour scheme our guy Merlin was wearing. There was also lots of yellow floating - yes floating! - around, mainly because it was yellow satin! On top of this Colin Morgan (Merlin) Very Vaguely looks like Tom Welling and they'd dressed him in this boxy short jacket - which didn't really register until you saw him in silhouette at some point in an underground cave (the voices had called him there...) and then it was a heck of a lot like looking at Clark!
Shame Young Arthur was too much of a brat to be Lex. Still, I'm sure young Merlin will have him growing up to be an all around nice guy in no time.
Erm yes sorry about that...

Date: 2009-05-26 06:15 pm (UTC)I think a lot of people have the same problem with CM - it does seem to be demanding in terms of length!
I was thinking of the kind of crack you get in SGA, which is the really good stuff, or even that you get in Torchwood. Most CM fic is sane, sensible and sober, which goes with the show, I guess. It doesn't lend itself to comedy that well.
Hee, NP. I never really watched Smallville, but I'm not surprised at how people have migrated. It was a shiny new show with the slash barely an arm's stretch away. It didn't appeal to me, but I had CM to go to, so I'm happy too :)
(no subject)
Date: 2009-05-26 06:26 pm (UTC)I don't think Morgan or Hotch would make good unicorns... No wait- you want comedy. hmm, *scratches chin*
I couldn't get on with Merlin as a show - the first episode was far too clunky and cliche ridden for me and though I sometimes dip into Merlin slash it's more for old times' sake because what I am actually seeing, 9 times out of 10, is 'Clark and Lex's Arthurian Adventure'.
CM is much more my cup of tea, these days.

Date: 2009-05-27 03:13 am (UTC)It's interesting to that you found LJ via House fic because I actually have very little interest in House fanfic (despite having seen most of the first several years of the show). For me, it's usually characters that make me interested in fanfic, and while the House characters are certainly all messed up, I'm not intrinsically that interested in finding more about them. (I think that has something to do with the fact that most of them annoy me, or something like that...)

Date: 2009-05-27 02:46 pm (UTC)House was a show that I think I tired of quickly. I tend to prefer shows that move around (geographically) rather than being tied to one place, and House was, in essence, hospital-bound. House fascinated me, but the shiny of Torchwood was just too distracting ;)

Date: 2009-05-28 01:49 am (UTC)There's a partial list on my profile (http://fish-echo.livejournal.com/profile) or I could just pick some randomly, whichever.
Mmm, that makes some sense (with regards to House). And Torchwood just is much shinier all around (and who can resist Captain Jack)
