I'm terribly listless today, which I think is a combination of sheer tiredness and Stuff that's going on that I have no control over. It's going to be a long week, in that respect at least.

On the other hand, I wrote 4 pages on the train yesterday, so at least one part of my brain still works. It's a Criminal Minds future!fic, and while I like the idea, I'm having trouble with character-wrangling. Serious editing is going to be needed if it's going to come out as a story rather than a self-indulgent ramble.

Oh, and at the weekend, I put my name down for an Archive Of Our Own account, and despite being told I should expect something by tomorrow, it actually came through on Sunday. One thing that's been on my list for ages is uploading stories to my website (which exists but isn't fit for public viewing yet), so I think I'll do that in parallel with uploading to AOOO. One thing I like about it is being able to bring my various writing names together - I can tell the archive that "heretoutopia", "jadesfire2808" and "Jadesfire" are all the same person, which is nice. I don't plan to stop posting fic to LJ, but it's nice to have my stories somewhere central as well. Backing things up has never been my strong point, and when I realised what would happen if LJ ever crashed.... Well. Once I could stop breathing into a paper bag, I realised that I really, really need to start getting myself sorted on that front. Hence the website and getting stories squirreled away in as many safe places as possible. Although, like a squirrel, I'm probably going to forget where I put them and end up hunting all over the internet for lost nuts stories.

I've been trying to get my head straight over writing priorities, which is hard when what you really want to do is crochet small flowers. The learning process is going pretty well, although I keep forgetting what stitches are called - I can do them all, but I can't remember when a pattern names a stitch, which of them I'm meant to be doing. I may need a crib sheet...

Anyway, on the writing front, I'm not going to get my Fandom Free For All stories done on time, so I need to do some shuffling to make sure they get slotted in between my firm deadlines. Hmmm...I'm also going to need a PodBang extension.

Firm deadlines right now are:
10th December: [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa
11th December: [livejournal.com profile] reel_torchwood
21st December: [livejournal.com profile] yuletide

Everything else is negotiable, and is going to have to wait in the plot bunny corrall until I can find time to play with them. More carrots not required. These critters are big enough as it is!

How's everyone else doing? Did we all survive Monday intact?

Everyone on my flist seems to be talking about AO3, and while I like its acronym, it just feels like taking myself a bit seriously to add my stories on something like that, you know? I mean, for people like you who produce proper fiction, it's great, and I think it's fab there's going to be a centralised database of people's stuff. But for people like me who just write because it's kinda fun and hey, wouldn't it be entertaining to tell a story about pretty boys living happily ever after it seems a bit excessive :)

Being overrun with plot bunnies is a good position to be in though! I'd be grateful for one bunny at the moment, let alone a glut of them...

Oh, you don't for a minute think I'm going to let you get away with that, do you? One of the things I really like about the AO3/OTW (for all that I have some misgivings about them that I can't quite explain) is that they value *all* fanworks. I'd love to see it be a full record of the fandom, a place for everyone. There's no way I'm going to let you get away with saying that your stuff is of less value than mine for the archive *tries to look stern*

*fails* yeah, well, we know how well that works for me, but you know what I mean. You've got a great body of work and it'd be a terrible shame if anything happened to it. Even if you're not so keen on your older stuff, your dS stories are awesome.

*tilts head* I could have sworn someone emailed you a list of prompts/questions/ideas... And you produced some lovely stuff at the beginning of the month. And yes, I'm going to encourage you to keep writing, whether you want it or not! So there :P

I've been trying to get my head straight over writing priorities, which is hard when what you really want to do is crochet small flowers.

This is a big dilemma in my life! Having *more* kinds of creative projects that you can and want to do doesn't necessarily make free time more satisfying, only more conflicted and "I'm never going to finish all these things I want to do!" On the other hand, when your head just isn't in a writing space and you can still produce something you like with a hook/needles and yarn, that's pretty cool. (I also love that when I'm in places I couldn't necessarily concentrate on writing, like watching TV with my parents or sitting in an interesting lecture, I can still be making progress on something.)

I wasn't going to check out Archive of Our Own, because such a huge percentage of my writing is Whoniverse I figured I can continue with Teaspoon for archiving. (Which I haven't done in ages, whoops...) But the fact that AoOO is part of the Organization for Transformative Works is very attractive.

Made it through Monday, though it was touch and go for awhile. Congratulations and a GOOBA to everybody for arriving at Tuesday. :)

Being able to do two things at once is definitely the big appeal of crochet. And that I don't have to be in the right headspace for it, nor do I have to come up with something of my own - I can follow someone else's pattern, or at least, I will once I learn how to read them ;)

I like the attitude behind the AO3, and the tagging system makes my little librarian heart beat faster. The main problem is going to be finding the time for uploading everything - I never did use my Teaspoon account properly :S

Well done for making it this far! A day closer to the weekend \o/

Tags are yay.

Ooh, and crocheting is a great thing to do while listening to audios. I do like to knit while watching TV, but a few certain shows I know I want to watch carefully, so I can't knit while I'm doing that. But with audios, even ones I really want to give my attention to and not be cleaning the house or whatever -- no problem. :)

I like the idea of AO3 and am in the queue. Part of me is wondering *why* I'm doing it as I have all my older stuff archived on my current website and most of my newer stuff too. Still, having things in more than one place in case stuff goes *boom* isn't a bad idea.

Big decision is what username to use - I'll probably stick with A Lanart seeing as I've been writing with that name for more than 10 years...

Multiple places is definitely a good plan, and I like the idea of supporting the AO3 apart from anything else.

*g* sticking to a name people know you by is probably a good plan!

*boggles mildly* Do you mean you don't have your stories anywhere other than LJ? I'm such a compulsive backer-upper of my creative stuff that that's just hard for me to imagine. (Though I guess my meta and such is LJ-only ... well, backed on DW now, I guess.)

As with most things, there's a story behind that. You see, most of what I know about technology, I learned for myself by reading teh intarwebs. And in most of that, there are words and phrases that I don't know and I just assume they mean something to someone and eventually I'll work it out. Unfortunately, one of those phrases for years was "back up". Somehow, I got it into my head that this was some highly skilled, technical activity like programming or something like that, and that you had to *know* how to do. I never had anyone to explain to my that what it really meant was "keep your stuff in more than one place"...

So yes, I'm currently trying to get my stuff sorted out and backed up - my DW account has got most of my stories in now (although I need to start actually using the damn thing properly) and I do have copies on our desktop at home, but it's a long, slow process when you've never done it before!

Heh, yeah, that makes sense! I guess I'm just compulsive about saving stuff ... very packratty. I write all my stories on my home computer, and keep all the documents afterwards (including all the fragments that I cut out of the finished stories and research notes from writing them); I have an external hard drive where I back stuff up, *plus* I make DVDs. (Though I guess if the house burned down I'd be screwed ... I'm so compulsive that I'm thinking about getting ANOTHER cheap external hard drive and backing everything up so that I could keep it somewhere outside the house. I think this is probably going a wee bit overboard.) Whenever I hear about people who lose vital data when a USB flash drive gets corrupted or their LJ goes down, I freak out a little bit because I'm SO anal about saving everything.

The one thing I'm not is particularly organized, which means that when I do have to go to a backup DVD, I have to hunt through a million of them to find anything. XD

I want to say "wA-hOO" for that - AoOO looks pretty.

And hooray for websites - mine doesn't exist yet - except I have finally sorted out my FTP problems. Annnnd I still owe you a graphic but I am still working on it I swear.

I'm very excited that AO3 can upload from a URL, which could save hours. The post still needs editing, but it's much simpler than C&Ping everything.

Heh, no rush! I have done anything on it myself for at least a month, and I'm giving myself a rough deadline of March next year, so there's plenty of time :) Thank you!
