Bored bored bored bored (repeat to fade)
May. 17th, 2007 06:36 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
When I'm working, it's about this point of the evening that I really start climbing the walls. I've read my f-list several times, and have to stop myself from pressing 'refresh' every two minutes as I try to remember that other people, you know, have lives and things. I still refresh my email every two minutes on the basis that you never know.
I've shelved every book that was out, I've checked and rechecked the renewals email account (nada) and I'm just starting to contemplate the various ficlets I want to write. The Watching Years is completely and utterly stalled, but I've got a few other thoughts to play with. But the boredom overtakes even that.
I've decided that the discussion group should have its own comm, so as not to interfere with the smooth running of the library - I'm going for "tw_fic_club" unless anyone has any more inspired ideas. Will create tomorrow, ready for chatting next week some time. I could do coursework, but the notes are at home. *sigh*
I am therefore forced to fall back on memage:
[gakked from pretty much everyone]
Name a character and I'll tell you three (or more) facts about them from my own personal pseudo-canon.
Fictional or original characters (all the minor characters in The Waiting/Wandering Years have full back-stories. yes, really, all of them), or pick someone random from my interests list.
If you get no reply, I've actually died of boredom. Or gone home.
EDIT: The latter is now true! Thanks guys, you're lifesavers :)

Date: 2007-05-17 05:56 pm (UTC)I had been meaning to ask you--had you figured out an ending to your House-with-a-baby fic? Because what you had started was just too wonderful to abandon completely. If you're really, really done with it, would you maybe mind opening it to a co-author to help finish? Maybe? :)

Right, it's still there, just made private. I'll combine them into one and unlock it to you, if you want. I'd love to kick-start my House writing - I think I need a change of scenery!
(no subject)
Date: 2007-05-17 06:19 pm (UTC)I did, actually, have an idea or two for the end, possibly, from a recent news item that's been circulating.
And sometimes the change of scenery is just the thing to get the creative juices flowing for everything, innit?

Date: 2007-05-17 06:41 pm (UTC)Getting past the block would be VERY welcome, especially as I have a 3000 word essay to get done...

Date: 2007-05-17 05:58 pm (UTC)I've already asked you loads about my favourite OCs, so I'll ask you about my favourite TW character - Ianto. Seeing as no-one's asking me about him *sulks*
(I forgot to say that people could ask me about my OCs *shuffles off to edit post*)
(no subject)
Date: 2007-05-17 06:14 pm (UTC)Right, Ianto:
1. He's much closer to his grandmother than his mother, and she's very much the parent-figure in his life.
2. He didn't really enjoy university that much - never really got into it. He had one or two close friends, but mostly found it big and overwhelming so he put his head down, worked, and came out with a respectable if not spectacular degree. In something like PPE, I think.
3. He has a secret penchant for country music, though he'd die before he admitted it.
Will that do?

Date: 2007-05-17 06:44 pm (UTC)terrylj made the mistake of asking me about Ianto - I had to force myself to stop at 14...

Date: 2007-05-17 06:01 pm (UTC)I'll bite! I'm curious to hear what your version of Wilson is like in your personal pseudo-canon.
(no subject)
Date: 2007-05-17 06:22 pm (UTC)1. He learned all he needed to know about practical jokes from a roommate in college who wouldn't stop playing them on him until Wilson put itching powder in his bed.
2. He only knew House for a year or so before the infarction, but it was one of those instant-click moments where, you can't quite understand why, but you suddenly find you're spending all your time together.
3. He and Stacy had a non-affair - nothing *happened* but it was this: || close.
*grin* It's nice to stretch these muscles again. I've quite missed the two of them!

*nods* I've wondered about that myself -- I also think they came very close.

Date: 2007-05-17 06:02 pm (UTC)So, tell me about Marion. Oh, and Doug from Waiting Years II.
(no subject)
Date: 2007-05-17 06:27 pm (UTC)Marion:
1. She was really, really good at English at school. If she hadn't joined Torchwood, she probably would have gone on to teach.
2. Hugh was her first boyfriend, her first kiss, her first everything.
3. She has a sister who lives in London.
Doug:
1. He's a maths prodigy, who was badly bullied for it at school. Oh, and he had a crush on his maths master (which didn't help with the bullying)
2. His mother was an invalid, which is why they couldn't get to the shelter during the air raid in which she was killed.
3. He wanted to be a pilot when he was a little boy, but the air raid shattered his nerves too much. But he had a real 'thing' for pilots, hence his (not so subtle) crush on Jack.
Hope that's suitably distracting

Date: 2007-05-17 06:34 pm (UTC)The concept of a memory map is easy. It's a list of where in a computer's memory everything is stored. It's the figuring out where to put everything that's the headache.

Date: 2007-05-17 06:44 pm (UTC)I should be bored more often! I've filled nearly half an hour thanks to you guys :)

Date: 2007-05-17 06:04 pm (UTC)Tell me something about Jack, who I have come to love through your stories.
(no subject)
Date: 2007-05-17 06:32 pm (UTC)There's an image to conjure with ;)
Jack? Gosh, where do I begin? Um...
1. He used to have a scar in the middle of his back where his sister bit him during a 'play fight'. It healed the first time he was brought back to life.
2. He always wanted to be a pilot, ever since he was a little boy. Wherever possible, when he pulls a con, he tries to be a pilot of some kind. It's as natural to him as breathing.
3. He loves everyone he sleeps with, in some way. He's not the 'embittered, can't fall in love' type. He's the type to give something of himself, no matter what. At first, at least. Lately, he avoids intimacy of any kind, to avoid that kind of connection.
I could go on, but I've already got 85,000 words and don't want to subject you to another
(no subject)
Date: 2007-05-17 06:46 pm (UTC)Ah, that is a strangely lovely quality. I'd sort of picked up a hint of that from the most recent things I'd read.
(no subject)
Date: 2007-05-17 06:50 pm (UTC)You see, this is how I ended up with a novel-length story that's only 2/3 done...
(no subject)
Date: 2007-05-17 06:08 pm (UTC)(no subject)
Date: 2007-05-17 06:35 pm (UTC)1. He was a POW briefly, towards the end of the war. He doesn't talk about it. Ever.
2. Before Jack, he followed Jock Goody everywhere - although he can lead, he's happier in a '2nd in command' role.
3. He and Marion would have liked more children, but it wasn't to be. The energy they would have poured into their family, they put into Jack (as well as Hywel, of course!)
Hope that's enough. Okay, so it's not enough, but it's all you're getting tonight ;)
(no subject)
Date: 2007-05-17 06:52 pm (UTC)So what are you saying? :D
1. He was a POW briefly, towards the end of the war. He doesn't talk about it. Ever.
NOT HELPING with the Hugh-love. *cuddles Hugh*
(no subject)
Date: 2007-05-17 06:55 pm (UTC)He's probably the character I'm most proud of - he doesn't say much, doesn't actually do that much, if you add it all up in terms of words, but he's this quiet presence at the back of the all the stories. In my head, he's the one who taught Jack how to be human again.
Sorry, I'm not helping, am I?
(no subject)
Date: 2007-05-17 07:17 pm (UTC)So what's your point? ;) I don't want to snog him, I just want to cuddle him!
In my head, he's the one who taught Jack how to be human again.
That's very nicely put. That's what I love about him. And although Hwyel and Jack have an awesome sort of dynamic, it's entirely different, and once Hugh is gone you can see that there's nobody who really fills that role for Jack, and you can see him getting more and more distant from everyone.
(no subject)
Date: 2007-05-17 08:14 pm (UTC)You know, I love it when someone's really *got* what I'm trying to say. I'm starting to get hope that I may actually manage to write The Watching Years after all...

Date: 2007-05-18 04:37 pm (UTC)!!! Is there doubt?
Don't make me come over there!

Date: 2007-05-17 06:14 pm (UTC)Tell me about Ianto if you still need something to do?
(no subject)
Date: 2007-05-17 06:40 pm (UTC)More about Ianto? Um...
1. He played in the school rugby team, and would have made it to regional level if he hadn't got his ankle stamped on in a match. He tore the ligaments and couldn't play properly for months.
2. His grandmother taught him how to make coffee properly. The secret is in the water temperature.
3. Lisa was his second serious relationship. The first was with a girl at college, but it ended soon after they graduated.
Not sure where they came from, but they just feel right...
Still bored?

Date: 2007-05-17 08:15 pm (UTC)Re: Still bored?
Date: 2007-05-18 06:45 am (UTC)Tosh:
1. She's allergic to strawberries.
2. She's always wanted a pet - something small and furry like a rabbit or a guinea pig - but her parents would never let her have one and now she doesn't think it would be fair as she's not at home enough.
3. She never told Owen about her crush on him - they're good friends and she didn't want to spoil it.
Will that do you? :D
Re: Still bored?
Date: 2007-05-19 07:04 am (UTC)Would you like to ask me about a character? I'd be happy to reply in a comment!
Re: Still bored?
Date: 2007-05-19 07:07 am (UTC)I'm intrigued by your dark!Jack - definitely interested in his 'canon'
(no subject)
Date: 2007-05-19 07:21 am (UTC)The sequel to As the Daylight Falls is going pretty well, incidentally, and I even have part of the THIRD Dark!Jack story written too. And tonight I ended up writing something about him and Laura Roslin as per my friend's request. It was meant to be a drabble; somehow, however, it ended up being 8 pages long (double-spaced, anyway). Perhaps I'll post it at some point. I may also wake up tomorrow and realize that it is TOTALLY BAD, though, as I am currently in no state to judge anything.
Lastly, would you mind adding As the Daylight Falls to the TW Library thing? For some reason I didn't get any readers (HELLO FEEDBACK WHORING!) and I'm hoping that might do the trick. I blame Dark!Jack for this sudden desire for attention, yes I do.
on dark!Jack
Date: 2007-05-20 05:28 am (UTC)Anyway, I'm going to begin with three main points, some of which you may already know from what you've read.
Here goes:
1. On January 31, 5015, Jack was born on Arcadia, a remote colony plagued by political instability and civil war. He joined up with the Rebel army as a young teen along with his best friend Jeff. Only Jack survived the war, after which an aid organization placed him with a foster family living in the capital city of his system's largest colony. Upon graduating from college, he joined the Time Agency.
2. He worked as a Field Agent for three years, visiting all sorts of different times and places. The job excited him, and, for a while, he was happy there. Then he broke the rules. He doesn't know what it was he did, because once the Time Agency caught up with him they removed the relevant events from his memory. After that, Jack decided to leave. He waited until the right moment; then he seized his chance and escaped.
3. Jack fell through a Rift and ended up in the BSG universe while attempting to run from a team of Time Agents, all of whom had been relentlessly pursuing him since he departed. He thus never got a chance to meet Rose and the Doctor or have crazy stuff happen to him on space stations. As a result, he ages normally and is not immortal.
And now, five random facts:
1. Jack was 12 years old when he saw two men kissing for the first time while waiting outside Arcadia's most notorious bar. His parents never found out where he and Jeff had gone, but they were certainly scolded for having run off when they caught him trying to sneak back into his house in the morning. If they had found out, Jack would have been in real trouble; the small village in which he grew up, needless to say, was not particularly tolerant.
2. Jack is very good with technology. He loves tinkering with things, though he hasn't had much time to do it lately.
3. If he could have his choice of professions, he'd probably choose to be a pilot. He also adores singing and is pretty damn good at it, and has consequently contemplated trying to make a career out of that as well. Alas, he's not exactly in a position to go for either possibility at present.
4. Jack hasn't cried in three years. He often wants to; he simply can't. This inability actually makes him feel even worse when he's at a low point.
5. Above all else, Jack wants to feel connected. He wants all the experiences that he's had to come together, and he wants to feel close to the people that surround him. But he's moved about so many times --- and feels like such an outsider in BSG land --- that he feels very detached, as a result, rather depressed. What first drew him to the drug to which he's addicted is that it creates exactly the feeling of connection he so craves.
And that's all! I hope that I haven't bored you too much. If I can manage to get dark!Jack out of his current predicament, I should be done with Part II soon. If you'd like to give it a read-through, just let me know!

Date: 2007-05-20 05:55 pm (UTC)I'm happy to have a look, if you'd like. I'm going to be swamped for the next week (coursework, ugh) but after that, things should calm down.

Date: 2007-05-19 07:06 am (UTC)God. My JB obsession is even making me like musicals, to which I am normally pretty indifferent! At least musicals like THIS one. Bring on the cynicism! Yeah!
