Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] nightporters and [livejournal.com profile] stackcats! Hope the weather is better for you than here right now \o/

Apparently my life didn't have enough complications already, since I got another one added last night, so I'm still not entirely able to focus right now. What I have been doing is saving links to my Delicious account, although most of them have to do with crochet and craft (if you're interested, I use the same username over there as here). But I do have a few of more general interest. Well. I say general interest. Mostly they're pretty things and Radio 4.

There's some great stuff on the BBC iPlayer right now. I particularly recommend the History of the World in 100 objects, The Classic Serial "What is a man?" which is about Henry II and his sons, the In Our Time archive and From the Ban to the Booker which traces the history of lesbian fiction (although I don't get on with her books, I love listening to Val McDermid).

The pretty stuff I am looking at includes the work of Baptiste Debombourg, who creates art out of staples; The Evolution of the Book; Dante's Internet; and two pieces about design: Color theory and The Global Visual Language of the BBC which is a fascinating look inside the process.

I've also been skimming this book, which is a vision of libraries in 2010, written in in early Seventies.

And finally, this article suggest you should ship your luggage rather than trust it to the airlines. I'm not sure I trust the post office more...

You know, there are days when I despair of the British abroad. We're trying to find somewhere to stay in Marrakech (all suggestions gratefully received!) so I'm looking at the reviews on Trip Advisor, which is generally reliable.

However, while people are generally reasonable about how they rate places, it's worth reading the reviews as well. As long as you have a nice soft cushion handy so that you've got padding when you're tempted to bang your head on the desk. Some complain about the lack of English spoken. It's Morocco. Get an Arabic phrasebook, dust off your schoolboy French and get on with it. Others complain about being woken by the call to prayer. As another reviewer says, that's like complaining about hearing a cockeral on a farm.

As Marcus Brigstocke is fond of saying, when it comes to showing up in other people's countries and behaving like twits, Britain's got form. "Hello there, what's this county called then? That's nice, I'm going to call it mine." Apparently, we're still at it.

More idiocy to follow as I unearth it.

It could be a spammy day today, but I promise to keep updating this post rather than flooding your flist with "...and another thing!"-style posts.

I've also realised that I've become utterly rubbish lately at remembering birthdays. So happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] xparrot and [livejournal.com profile] sheryden for today, and [livejournal.com profile] hellenebright for yesterday! Hope you have/had/will have great days! :D

My hormones have me in the most un-birthday mood imaginable, but things are, in fact, good on the whole. My RL presents include dangly earrings, money towards a baby computer, a gorgeous skirt, a pretty scarf and SGA S3 and S4, all of which are awesome. Links to other presents below. Thanks for all the good wishes, guys! Much appreciated :D

Torchwood/Discworld fic by [livejournal.com profile] szm

A cover for 'Moonshine' by [livejournal.com profile] thefannishwaldo. Okay, that's technically part of the Fandom Free For All, but the timing's good.

As is [livejournal.com profile] rustydog's - your postcard arrived this morning! Thank you!

And in double proof of her brilliance, Rusty has done the most awesome recording of my SGA fic "Five Times McKay and Sheppard came back to Atlantis without their clothes". Download it from this post and tell her how brilliant it is - I've listened to it 3 times already and it just keeps getting better!

[livejournal.com profile] bringthehappy is going great - keep up the happy!

I've volunteered to write 5 things for people as part of the Free For All. That's probably my limit sensibly, given I want to get some stuff down for [livejournal.com profile] bringthehappy as well, but it's been great to add to my 'to do' list again. My writing is always better under pressure, and with that, [livejournal.com profile] artword and the [livejournal.com profile] sgahcchallenges exchange coming up, I hope to stave off the blues and get rid of the writer's block that's held me up all week.

Also to that end, a meme nicked from [livejournal.com profile] dune_drd (cross-posted to [livejournal.com profile] heretoutopia):

Request any fic of mine and I will provide you with a commentary/annotations, like a DVD extra

[please don't request "Resonance" as one is forthcoming soon (squeee!) but otherwise, everything linked from the sidebar is fair game]

Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] bironic *coughs* Only a day late...

I'd half-thought to give you the fic I wrote on Friday as a present, but since you ended up working on that, I decided to go with my original plan:

Title/text-link: The Pretty Peculiar Pegasus Pesach
Author: [livejournal.com profile] roga
Reader: [livejournal.com profile] jadesfire2808
Summary: Passover in Atlantis, in an Everyone's Jewish!AU.
Length: 29.20 mins/11.7MB
Download: From Megaupload [permanent link to follow when I get around to cross-posting...]

With HUGE thanks to [livejournal.com profile] roga for permission to read her fantastic story and for help with pronounciation. Remaining gaffes are all my own work. No sniggering at the back, please, I'm doing my best ;)

[livejournal.com profile] bironic, hope you had a lovely day, and here's to many more.

Happy birthday, Becky! Hope you have a calm, non-stressful, lovely day.

I won't see Who when it's broadcast tonight, as I'm at the theatre (a promenade production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' in one of Oxford's parks, since you didn't ask), so no squee and definitely no LJ until the morning.

This is a public service announcement:

If you are trying to write SGA fic, it is a seriously bad idea to listen to podfics of fandom classics on the way to work. This will lead to you wanting to cry, hide under the desk, and swear never to touch a keyboard again. Especially if your own story is lacking on the plot front.

That is all.

Advanced warning: I am going to try to contain my spamming tendencies today, but make no promises. Hopefully I can restrain myself to just updating this post as I go...

First, and most importantly:

Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] donutsweeper!
To the best cheerleader in the business, a good friend and a constant source of fun and encouragement (and donuts).

Hope you have a lovely day, hon. Present to follow!

[livejournal.com profile] rustydog is wonderful, which I hope you already knew, but she is extra-wonderful today for recording one of my SGA stories. Go! Listen! Tell her how brilliant it is!

Stargate Atlantis, Gen.

Woo-hoo!

I'm in an oddly good mood today, which is not going to last, of course, but I intend to ride the wave while it does. So if I owe you something, or have forgotten something, please let me know - grab me while I've got the energy!

Since I am so bouncy, would anyone like a postcard? I've still got some cute ones and some Oxford ones left, and they're yours for the asking. Am screening comments so feel free to put details there, or email me on jadesfire2808[at]yahoo.co.uk.

*sings* Happy Birthday To Me!

(yes, [livejournal.com profile] travels_in_time, I know it's your birthday too - I've got a whole other post for you here)

Well, it's not my actual birthday, the date of which is cunningly and subtly concealed in my username, but it is the birthday of my LiveJournal. One year and nearly 300 posts later, there's no getting rid of me, however much that might disappoint you. So I felt the need to do something to mark the occasion. Okay, so I may spam your friends pages a little with fic and posts, what with one thing and another, but as that's not new, I thought I'd do something else to mark it.

a few stats... )

I'm not given to gushing, as it makes my inner-Brit get all hot under the collar, so you might want to make a note of this post. It may well be another year til you see the next...

I can't go round my whole flist and say how awesome you are, as I only have one lifetime and plan to do other things with it as well. I'm just hoping that those people I can't mention by name will forgive me, and be reassured that you make me smile on a daily basis. It cheers up a dull and often lonely job to know you lot are out there.

And if you can't remember why you're seeing this... I know there are some of you who probably groan at seeing my name come up again and are wondering how I ended up on your f-list anyway. No hard feelings, not a problem - these things happen - and I'm not going to be offended by being defriended - hope you have fun out there :)

A year in unreal life. Cut for sappiness, gushing and length. Comes with a high sugar warning. )
