jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Default)
My head is still a mess at the moment, so I have vague hopes of actual content somewhere in the not too distant future. In the meantime, I've been doing a little housekeeping.

I was going to say I wrote nothing in June, then I opened a whole bunch of tabs, so apparently I write even when I don't think I'm writing.

The List )

That's 6 ficlets, just under 2,500 words in total. Not too shabby.

Then, of course, there's my [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang entry, which was written over a few months so I'm not sure it counts towards my June total.

Nothing Else But Change
27,000 words, Jack, Gen.

Thinky thoughts and why I love this story and wish I'd written it differently. Including thoughts about Jack, philosophy, getting back to basics and the lasting influence of Buffy the Vampire Slayer )

Wow, that went on longer than I meant it to! Thoughts, feedback and concrit is welcomed and encouraged for 'Nothing Else But Change'. I knew what I was going for, but was aware I didn't quite hit it. Anything that will help me get there next time would be much appreciated.

This...isn't really the Housekeeping post I meant it to be, but I got a bit carried away and it's now time for coffee. Maybe now I've got it out of my system I'll be able to post about what I *really* wanted to post about later on.

Hope everyone's having a good day *waves*

I'm thinking a lot about writing at the moment, and am trying to organise those thoughts into something resembling coherency (no sniggering at the back; I can hear you!). Rather than create a separate filter – I met many of you through writing, after all – I'm going to be very strict about cutting the thoughts, in order to save the scroll fingers of those who'd rather pass on by.

It's weird, the things a meme can make you realise )

What about people who take a saner approach to the art of story structure? Do you find that you have missing scenes, the fic equivalent of DVD extras? Or does everything that you write end up in the story?

[apologies for spamtasticness today, folks. Cross-posted link to [livejournal.com profile] heretoutopia]
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Buffy - Dawn/blah blah blah)
I was going to make this shorter, but I have too many thoughts. But I kept it under 1600 words and used headings to keep things moving in more or less a straight line. Go me.

Contains spoilers for Doctor Who, Torchwood, Stargate: Atlantis Season 4, fairy tales, Greek mythology and the Bible.

I have been seduced by the shiny that is Firefly, but together with this week's SGA episode, it's triggered a rather odd train of thought, bringing into focus something that I've been interested in for a while. There's no big argument here and no profound point to make. It's more of a series of observations that have been gathering weight in my mind. If anyone spots a higher meaning, please point it out to me. Otherwise, please keep your arms and legs inside the car and enjoy the ride.

I was going to call this 'what's in a name?' but decided it was too cheesy even for me (yes, that's possible) )

And this was the actual point of the ramble – Spoilers for SGA 4x14 'Harmony' )

I've just posted a piece of meta to [livejournal.com profile] torchwood_meta on structure and pacing in stories. It's something I've been thinking about a lot lately, both in betaing other people's work and in writing my own. In writing it, I discovered that I think it about it both consciously and instinctively, and approach it in a way that surprised me. And possibly confirmed that my mind is a rather odd place to be...

Anyway, it's not Torchwood specific (as I'm not writing much Torchwood at the moment) so people who don't watch the comm may find it interesting as well. I'd love to get a good discussion going on this one, as I found it quite a battle to write.
