Day 15

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, or to your flist/circle/followers. Share your love and squee as loud as you want to.

Without wanting to get all gushy at you,* my most-loved and most-consistent fandom has always been my Friends-list. I arrived on LJ looking for the House fandom, found it. Then I found the Torchwood fandom. And the SGA fandom. And the Merlin fandom. Through all of those, my interests waxed and waned. I got interested in other media without getting stuck into the fandom - White Collar, MCU - but I kept up my Flist. I added people whose interests coincided with mine, and those whose didn't because they sounded interesting. We ended up talking about everything from deep character motivations to terrible writers to missing scenes to how I was going to run away to Morroco (it was decided more camles were required). I screwed up, and people explained to me why without shouting at me, so I got a chance to apologise and put things right. I got Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr accounts, but none of them really hit the spot that LJ did. While I'm not someone who believes you can just turn the clock back, I am an eternal optimist, and I'm hopeful of putting something new together.

Because fandom isn't the canon, it's the people.

Okay, we all update less often these days, and I'm slowly learning how to Tumblr (and building a new Flist there, which is kind of awesome too), but there are names that have been there from the start that I look out for each morning. There are people I've met in person after knowing for years online, so I can hear their voices when I read their posts. There are some folks I met in person before adding them here. And there are people with long-deleted journals that I'm still close friends with.

We always used to say that you get the Friends List you deserve, but I have never really felt that's true, because I don't know what I did to deserve you lot. The Snowflake Challenge has been wonderful for bringing me into the orbit of a bunch of new people, and I'm genuinely excited to get to know you over the coming months. I've added so many people to my Circle, and every time, I've thought "but should I?" Then I think how it makes me smile when people have added me, and I click anyway.

So hello, people. Old and New. It's been a fun fortnight, and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.

*I'm definitely going to get gushy at you.

What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Do you love fiber arts and want to see more fannish crafting? Do you want to make at least one fanwork per month? Do you want your friends to leave comments on each fanwork they consume? Or is there something you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy as well?

Day 14

In your own space, create your own challenge. Whatever your challenge is, and have fun with it!

My first thought was "er....probably not". I've had or given myself the confidence for everything else so far, but for this one, my mind went blank.

My second thought was "it'll be interesting to see what everyone else has come up with!"

Therefore my third thought was "that's my challenge!"

Not necessarily for the comments on today's post, but for any day so far, go comment on someone's post who you haven't spoken to yet. If you can find a post that doesn't have any comments yet, even better! it doesn't have to be anything long or deep - just the little "ooh, cool" comments that I've had this week have been such a boost.

Or just pick the person below you in today's thread - I know I'm guilty of starting at the top and only getting as far as my own comment. But having people randomly drop in and say nice things has been a highlight of the Snowflake Challenge for me, and I'd love to know other people are getting that as well.

Fly, my pretties! Go out there and spread comment-joy! ;D

Of course, my fourth thought was "quick, get this posted before someone else thinks of it"! But you are all welcome to steal it, if you would like :D

I love today’s challenge! I’ve legit been waiting for this one. I love lists and making plans and reflecting on what has worked and how new things might work better. Which, is strange for a procrastinator like myself.

But lists give my life order. Goals give me clear, direct things to work towards. And sometimes they even get accomplished. Sometimes..

I also love that this challenge is happening now, almost two weeks into the challenge. We’ve had time to reflect, to get excited about things again, to reconnect with our fandom selves and the people who are in it with us. We know what we want and we have a clearer sense of what it would take to accomplish and if we have it in us to get it done. WOOOOOT!

Day 13:
In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

And remember, the first thing on any To Do List, and Goals list is “Make List” that way you almost immediately have one thing to cross off! Such a great start.

I've done a personal version of this (locked), but I have a fannish goals list too:

1. Participate in more fests. I love deadlines, I like meeting people, I like collaborations. So I'm looking out for Big Bangs, Pod_Together, any fests at all that might get my brain going in one way or another. Last year, I spotted half of them far too late to take part, so I'm going to be watching like a hawk this year.

2. Learn to speak Tumblr better. Critical Role fandom in particular is mostly Tumblr-based, and it's a platform I find very, very hard to navigate. But I got a lot better at in 2017 by just plain being braver, so time for more of that as the new campaign gets going.

3. Sort out the back catalogue. There's fic and podfic all over the place, in my journal and on my computer. It would be good to get it all archived properly on AO3 and organised properly on my computer.

4. Leave more feedback. I think that's something most people have been saying they'd like to do better at, and it goes well with my general goal of talking to more people.

5. Consume more media. Yes, really. I spent most of 2017 with old favourites, as my brain felt too sensitive for many new things. The only new thing I really dipped into was Marvel Netflix, but even then, it was more a continuation of having enjoyed Daredevil. In 2018, I want to try new things to see if I like them. Everything from books people are recommending to the music everyone recommended to me. Time to stretch myself a bit.

Whatever your 2018 goals, may your deadlines be manageable, your collaborators considerate, and your commenters plentiful ♥

Day 12

In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a podfic, an icon, a sketch, a meta, or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Cross stitch. Draft an essay about a particular medium. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of book you love, a ship manifesto, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Create something.

Given my current energy levels, I'm cheating a bit with this one, but I am, at least, taking myself out of my comfort zone. I'm far too out of it for writing, and my throat is too sore to risk podficcing. I can't draw a circle around a penny, but something I loved doing for #ITPE was making podfic covers.

I like to listen to podfic as an audiobook, as especially for long ones, it lets me stop in the middle and keep my place. But with so many on my phone, I find covers important for telling what I've got, and what I might like to listen to. So I've started making them for other people's podfic as well. I hope they don't mind!

I've got a bunch of them on my iPad that I'll get around to posting eventually, but for now, this is for [personal profile] copperbadge's White Collar AU, Never Leave a Trace. The podfic is by Rhea, and it's a really excellent reading that I thoroughly recommend.

Now I've been brave enough to post this, hopefully I can get up the nerve to post the others as well!

Day 11

Share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life.

So. This is an interesting one. Because the media that changed my life was Doctor Who. I grew up in a non-geeky household, but the last of the Seventh Doctor stories were airing when I was about 8, and I remember specifically seeing parts of Battlefield on the TV in our living room. But Mum must have decided it was too scary, or we were out at the wrong time, because I definitely didn’t see anything else. Still, they stayed with me, and when I was eleven, I discovered the novelisations. And I devoured them. Imagine seeing all your favourite Classic Doctor Who stories, but without any slightly iffy special effects to detract from them. I got all of that.

I bought the VHS of Third, Fourth and Fifth Doctor stories. I had the little metal TARDIS box that contained the Trial of a Time Lord VHS set. I bought book after book. My most vivid memory is sitting on the floor in a dark corner of the Waterstones in Lakeside, trying to decide which ones to buy, and trying to sneakily read a few before Mum came back for me.

Doctor Who made me a geek. It’s sort of that simple.

But there’s another part to this question, so I’m going to cheat and answer that too:

How’d y'all get drawn into fandom? Fall into a favorite book, or movie? Something about a character caught your eye and made you think… huh, I’d like to know MORE about them.

MORE is definitely the operative word )

Day 10

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) Tell us what makes it work for you, and why it appeals to you so much. Talk about what you like to see in fanworks featuring that theme most. Feel free to include recs and examples!

Does Gen count? Gen feels like it should count, because it’s always a small minority of fic, but I suppose it’s more of a genre than a trope. Note to self: dig out that ‘Hardcore Genficcer’ icon.

My first instinct was "telepathy!" as that’s my favourite thing to write, but because I have such strong feelings about it, it’s not always my favourite thing to read. I think that would have to be AUs, especially fusions of one fandom with another. As someone with very little ability to write outside canon, I’m always fascinated by how writers take one detail and go off in a totally plausible but utterly different direction. And I love the cleverness of fusing one fandom with another, picking elements of each and crafting something new. It’s something I’m trying write at the moment, and man it’s difficult. It’s that cleverness that draws me in, the moment where there’s a detail in this AU world that is a damned clever take on the original one, and it just makes me grin from ear to ear.

One of my favourites is an old one, a Merlin/Firefly fusion, We are Stardust which I like because it does more than just take characters from one fandom and dump them in another. It takes elements of both and blends them into a seamless whole, and it’s the perfect length to give you enough and leave you wanting more.

There’s also Kianspo’s Let us Dare, which turns the world of Merlin on its head, with humour and warmth. I would have watched the hell out of this show, I really would.

SGA, like Merlin, spawned about three million AUs a week, but the one that sticks in my head is Greyias’ See No Evil. I loved how it kept Rodney and John perfectly in character, while changing their roles utterly. It’s a long, satisfying read. And I was just talking to Naye and Sholio about A Clear and Different Light, which is a stunningly complete AU with talking whales. Tell me, who doesn’t want talking whales in their fic?

More recently, I loved Lady Ragnell’s Hold me close and fear me not, which is a Daredevil/Fairy Tale* fusion. I like how it feels like it’s set in a world just a side-step from our own, and how the magical elements have their own logic.

Please do rec me your own favourite AUs!

*I’d heard of, but wasn’t familiar with the story of Tam Lin before reading the fic, and it really, really didn’t matter.

Day 9

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I mostly write and podfic, so I'm going to be self-indulgent and rec three of each. For everything that got posted, there were five or six that didn't, so I'm proud of my work for the most part, and I think these are pretty representative.

It appears I learned to write in the SGA fandom )

I also plan to use the challenge as a chance to fulfill Day 6's challenge of leaving feedback, and reccing them here.

Read so far:

Day 8

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I actually ended up going to my AO3 works list to try and figure out what to talk about. That didn't help much, as apparently 'Multifannish' should be somewhere in my bio.

Instead, I'm going with Jessica Jones. Apparently at length )

ETA: So, in a piece of Reading Comprehension Fail, I didn't actually manage to pick an episode. I think AKA The Sandwich Saved Me is my favourite, for being the turning point of the series. Without spoilers, things swivel on this episode, intertwining with some of Jessica's backstory. I love flashback episodes, and few shows do them better than this.

Day 7:

In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Surf the comments and find people to give love to.

Day 4

In your own space, create a fannish wishlist. No limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. And if you grant a wish, do the same thing!

Would you like a story for a little fandom that’s got no traction? Would you like a trope written for a popular one? Maybe you have an amazing idea for a set of song lyrics but no way of setting them to music. Maybe there’s a piece of fanart you’re craving, or you wish you had icons for your favorite show. Maybe you want someone to talk about a book with. Maybe it’s something vaguer; maybe you’d like recommendations for new canons to try, or you’d like people to take a look at your fanworks and let you know what they think. Maybe you’d like to make more friends here, or on another platform; maybe you’d like an inbox to squee into or comment fic.

Oh gosh, I am ABSOLUTELY going to be trawling the comments on this one, compiling my writing inspiration list for the year. woot!

For myself?

1. People to chat to. I'm aiming to be better about posting in this space, and I miss talking to people. I work a fairly solitary job, my ME keeps me from socialising too extensively in real life, and I noticed I was turning into a hermit. So please feel free to add away, even if you're not sure - I like that DW separates 'subscribe' and 'grant access' so that you can get to know each other at a less intense pace. And I'm going to try to be better about commenting on my list too.

2. Art for literally anything I've written. As someone who can't draw a circle around a penny, and has only the most basic of image editing skills, the world of fic/podfic covers is a strange and wonderful one. I've been getting better at it, but I'd love some for my Yuletide fics in particular.

3. Music recommendations. Last year saw me discover Vienna Teng and The Wailin' Jennies, but I'd love for you to tell me what my bands of 2018 should be. I like melody, tight harmony, Country, Rock and Pop. Don't worry if it's really old and you think everyone already knows it. I have lots of problems getting to know new music, and probably haven't heard most of what you'd consider classics! I'm not looking for a long list, just one or two YOU MUST HAVE HEARD THISes.

4. Comments. On podfic especially (not just mine - just search for your fandom and podfic on AO3 and see what happens, or see my Day 3 post for recs), but on any fic. I particularly like the idea of commenting on things that don't have any comments. On AO3, find your fandom, put "sort:>comments" into the 'Search Within Results' box, and it will sort the list so that fics with the least number of comments are at the top. I guarantee you'll make an author's day!

5. [personal profile] analise010 made this their request, and I can only echo it: Add a transformative works statement to your profiles, stating what you're happy for people to do with your work. It's like a lure for podficcers, if you'd like that for your fic, and also for remixers and artists. It's even helpful if you want to tell people to Keep Out! There's no wrong or one way to do it, but it's much appreciated if you feel you can.

Day 3

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

This is a shorter list than I'd like. I've been caught up in a podfic/Yuletide-writing haze lately, and my mind has gone blank. So these are old favourites, recent finds and other things in between.

PODFIC

It's a truism that podficcers don't get feedback. It's partly the nature of the medium - not many people have the comment page open when they're listening - and partly that not as many people listen as they do read. So if you like anything here, or if you listened to something lately, please go and give the podficcer some love. It's hard work and we do it first and foremost because we love it, but I promise you every kudos is treasured and cherished.

I have a basic rule, that if Blackglass records it, and I am vaguely aware of the fandom, I will listen to it. Having said that, there is one of hers that I find myself about to quote regularly, in her exact intonation, before remembering that no one else will get the reference.

Culture, and other balls of twine is how post-Avengers canon *should* have gone. But mostly, the rendition of "that's what's going in the diary for June?" is firmly stuck in my head, and I have now earwormed myself. I also commend to you Fonder (Star Wars) and Robot Trip (MCU)

The whole of Scifigirl47's Toaster-verse, but especially Four (or five) reasons for kidnapping Tony Stark as read by Hananobira. It's not my sort of fic - I am strictly a Gen girl, and prefer my emotions unstated - but I find the reading comforting, and I turned to it in a bout of severe anxiety lately. There's something about Hananobira's voice that I find deeply reassuring.

The best podfic in the history of ever remains Texts from Cephalapods. The original fic was on Photobucket, and hasn't yet been replaced. The original podfic went down when the Audiofic archive had a mishap. But there is a GLORIOUS live recording from Podfication 2016 that I urge you to listen to now. No, right now. Shoo. I'll wait*. From that same year, Drunk Historians and From the Desk of N Fury are also glorious.

*I pulled it out and created it as a single track from the audio file so that I could have it on repeat for a while. I still laughed every time. It's possible I need to get out more...

FIC

I suspect these are mostly 'big hits' but they're maybe a chance to revisit something you'd forgotten.

Recently, Go Now, You Are Forgiven hit me just about as hard as is possible. It's Critical Role, but to a certain extent, you can read it without knowing much about the fandom. It handles religion in one of the most sensitive ways I've ever come across, feeling respectful, critical, sharp and tender, all at once. There's tons and tons of good CR fic, of which I particularly love Impossibletruth's two AUs, We're on the road to nowhere (let's find out where it goes) (Star Wars fusion) and it starts with an earthquake (post-apocalyptic).

To get a little old on you, The Best Laid Plans is a wonderful Merlin Gen story. It's long and plotty and clever and the character voices are So. Good. Similarly Let Us Dare is a wonderful AU and The Five Kingdoms is fabulous. Both take things in unexpected but utterly believable directions, which is definitely something I look for a in a fic.

I recently stumbled across the Rivers of London stories of Philomytha and tore through them in a few days. the walls of where is particularly haunting, but they're all great to read. In the same fandom, Mind the Gap by maple_clef is a great case-fic.

For laugh out loud funny, a recent favourite was Occupational Safety (podfic link - story link in post), which picks up an obvious question from Star Wars: why aren't there more handrails?

For such a good fic, Ask no questions, hear no lines has criminally few hits. It's a wonderful Maria Hill character study that is just perfect in tone and execution. If you know the MCU and read nothing else on this list, go give this one some love.

Day 2

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.

While I could go back further, I think I'm going to stick with 2017 for this one. About the middle of the year, after I'd started to dip my toe cautiously back into fandom, and had posted a few odds and ends for the first time ages, I got a ping from Blackglass ([profile] xdriorix) to say that there was a collaborative podfic happening for Pod_Together, and I NEEDED to sign up. I ended up contributing a small part, meeting new people and even helping with some beta-type services. It was just what I needed, when I needed it, to feel part of something and remember why I enjoy fandom in the first place.

I'm not the sort of person who gets included spontaneously in many things in real life - normally, I find out things happened afterwards, my health has severely limited what I can do, and I don't get invited to very much* - so having someone hear of a project and think of me was incredibly touching, and probably helped propel me into the rest of the fannish things I did this year.

*that's not WOE IS ME, btw. I've become a bit of a hermit this year! Knitters and fans have made the effort to include me, though, proving that they are, as ever, The Best.

Day 1

In your own space, talk about why you're participating in Snowflake and, if you’ve participated in the past, how the challenge has affected you. What drew you to it? What did you take away from it? What do you hope to accomplish this year?

I think I started one a few years ago, but only got to about Day 3. 2017 was the year I got back into Fandom, so I'm hoping that by spending the start of 2018 on fannish things, I'll keep that momentum going. I got a little burned out with challenges in the last quarter of the year, and need to recharge the batteries. It's also a good way to get back into the habit of posting here.
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Book with key)
I'm cautiously - so, so cautiously and carefully - trying to tease out the fannish enthusiasm I used to have. There's probably a long meta post in my head somewhere about this, but as I'm currently full of cold, it's going to take me a while to get to that.

But skimming back through old fic, working out what I like, don't like and remembering 'huh, I used to be able to write', I've found that what really gets me motivated is a challenge. The more restrictive the guidelines, the more I enjoyed myself. Boundaries are there to be explored, stretched and poked at, and I've never found them restrictive. I know I want to get back to writing, and I know I want to write Merlin, but that part of my brain is all skittish and nervous, and wants prompts, which I'm too nervous to ask for, because I don't know if I can fill them or not. It's all very annoying, and suggests I need to ease myself back in rather than taking any kind of plunge.

So I'm coming back to my fannish self with a very, very gentle challenge - [community profile] snowflake_challenge. The idea is that over 15 challenges, you celebrate fandom, and your own place in it. I kind of like that. It's hosted on DW, but OpenID comments are welcome.

Even better, there's no time restriction, so those of us who like to procrastinate can chip in when we're ready. Day 1 was, not surprisingly, supposed to be posted on 1st January, and although I wrote this then, I've only just been able to stop blowing my nose for long enough to get it posted.

Day 1: In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Although most of my LJ is now locked down, I've unlocked these stories for folk who prefer to read there, and included DW and AO3 links too. It's felt a bit like sorting through an attic and rediscovering an old life, which may possibly be good for me.

I went with 5 stories, trying for a spread of fandoms )
