jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Random - Jack's timeline)
I have watched "Something Borrowed", and while I enjoyed it, I am strangely without the urge to post a response. Except to pass on my thanks to the director who made JB look brain-meltingly gorgeous in pretty much every shot. I think it fried my critical faculties.

I do, however, have major squee about next week's episode, so cut for spoilers from the trailer )
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Thinky - garfield - deep thoughts)
Why do I always think I'm not going to write reaction posts? Because it always happens anyway. Oh, and the icon's an exaggeration, by the way, but I don't have one that says 'random thoughts'.

Before I get going though, and counterpoint to yesterday's rant, this fic makes some interesting points about Jack's approach to, well, life really. I agree that Jack cries more easily and freely than your average 20th century bloke (I like the reasons given in the piece). I still object to 'collapsing in a gooey mess' stories but maybe there should be more crying!Jack fics out there.

There's a challenge for all the writers on my flist – write me Jack crying, for whatever reason strikes you at the time. *puppy eyes* Please?

*ahem* Moving swiftly on...

A Day in the Death – thinky, happy post. Or 'I may as well subtitle my journal 'all about Jack' and have done with it' )
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Text - wrong on the internet)
I may well regret making this private rant public, but I've tidied up the typing (although at least one typo will remain, I guarantee it), but it's this or cataloguing. Plus ranting is good for the spleen. Or something.

Grrrr. Argh. )
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Writing - books)
For all the librarians on my flist:

Pimp my bookcart!

For all the Torchwood fans:

Midnight Song by [livejournal.com profile] seti_drd. Jack&Tosh, friendship, sweet but not cloying, gentle and warm.

For all the SGA fans:

Tenets of Leadership in Vacuum by [livejournal.com profile] xparrot Midway tag. John&Rodney friendship, delivers snarky grins and an emotional gut punch. Pitch perfect.
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Happy - bouncy elephant)
I barely know where to start with this, since I loved so much of the episode. In an attempt to get myself to calm down, I've started with the few things that bugged me about it – mostly plot holes, nothing major – before getting to the 101 things I loved. I think I'm going to need a whole other post for my response to Jack, but I'm going to need more time for that, so I've pretty much left him out here.

I did watch 'Reset' as well, but that post is going to have to wait until I've written the [livejournal.com profile] torchwood_meta one, and stopped bouncing off the walls with excitement.

Torchwood 2x05: Adam: The Bad )

Torchwood 2x05: Adam: The Good (or 'everything else') )
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Writing - pencils)
...then I promise to stop spamming you for the day. Night. Whatever.

Choices by [livejournal.com profile] szm is a fantastic 'Meat' episode tag. It's a true 'team fic', and cuts right to the heart of the relationships in the episode. I didn't enjoy the episode that much, but I loved this.
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Random - Jack - common sense)
Regular readers will know that I don't really watch vids very much. I make exceptions, but generally speaking, they're pretty much a mysterious papery object to me.

But this one, I get. And will have to watch again. And again.

Jack-centric, spoilers for the first couple of episodes of Torchwood S2 and generally brilliant.

Torchthumping. Go! Watch! Grin!
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Cross - Ianto - put down the instant)
I've finally managed to get all the way through 'Meat', but since I couldn't face writing my episode reaction twice, I've put it over in [livejournal.com profile] torchwood_meta

There were parts I loved and parts I hated, and I'm still making up my mind which are which. If you want to give me a hand with that, the discussion post is here.

Fun stuff

After moaning yesterday, let me give you some happy things today:

- Through the Virgin Radio site, you can access various live sessions and videos. As I've mentioned before, I love Newton Faulkner's music, and they've got a recording of him "Unplugged and Airborne". The man even sounds great playing in a hot air balloon, and looks over the moon to be doing it at all, as well as slightly disconcerted by the occasional blasts of hot air. Plus, the acoustic version of 'Dream Catch Me' is soooo much better than the single version. His music always makes me smile, and this was no exception.

- I've recently read a couple of very happy SGA fics: Fluff and fold by [livejournal.com profile] kristen999 is a lovely 'slice of life' type story, as well as tackling one of life's great questions. the other is If you can't beat 'em, join 'em by [livejournal.com profile] wildcat88 is a great Harmony tag, with some pitch-perfect banter.

- Not so happy, but just gorgeous is All Our Sunsets by [livejournal.com profile] topaz_eyes. Set at the end of 'Captain Jack Harkness', it captures a moment so beautifully, and is a brilliant insight into Jack. Just lovely.

- They've found a new animal. And it's so cute!

- [livejournal.com profile] matsujo9 introduced me to www.cuteoverload.com, which has cheered up some miserable days, but my favourite is definitely the dolphins blowing bubbles. Just incredibly sweet and surprisingly soothing to watch.
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Buffy - Dawn/blah blah blah)
I was going to make this shorter, but I have too many thoughts. But I kept it under 1600 words and used headings to keep things moving in more or less a straight line. Go me.

Contains spoilers for Doctor Who, Torchwood, Stargate: Atlantis Season 4, fairy tales, Greek mythology and the Bible.

I have been seduced by the shiny that is Firefly, but together with this week's SGA episode, it's triggered a rather odd train of thought, bringing into focus something that I've been interested in for a while. There's no big argument here and no profound point to make. It's more of a series of observations that have been gathering weight in my mind. If anyone spots a higher meaning, please point it out to me. Otherwise, please keep your arms and legs inside the car and enjoy the ride.

I was going to call this 'what's in a name?' but decided it was too cheesy even for me (yes, that's possible) )

And this was the actual point of the ramble – Spoilers for SGA 4x14 'Harmony' )
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Writing - Grammar)
I feel like I've just got into SGA fic, only to get out again. Having conquered my fear of [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic, I'm about to post my second story there (I'll update the running list later - it's getting to a respectable length, now). Yay me :D The first was fun because I love to play with dialogue, the second was even more fun. I started out in writing by writing 'flashfic' where you only had an hour to write your story, so I had a go at the 38 minutes challenge (as in "Write a story in...") and loved it so much. You're not so hard on yourself when you've written in a short length of time, and I think it's good for the perfectionist in me to see that things can come out well, even when they're not perfect.

But I really want to get back to Torchwood. Jack is very insistent that I finish his story before the Season 2 starts in January, and has kindly conceded that yes, he does like the first plot I've come up with. So he and I will be holed up for a while, trying to figure stuff out.

In the meantime, I can't rec strongly enough [livejournal.com profile] perspi's Beneath Your Heart, dealing with Teyla in S4 (*edited for spoilerphobes*). It's just such a wonderful look at how things could go, that I know I'm going to be disappointed with how they play out on screen next year. This should be canon. The tone is perfect and everyone's in character - it made me smile and sniff in equal measure.

Go, read and flail, like I did.
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Default)
Written for [livejournal.com profile] ficcommentary. In two parts, because brevity is not my strong point.

This was the story when I knew I had a series on my hands. Jack and I were getting on great, and the OCs had good, strong voices in my head. I didn't plan on getting to 85,000+ words, but these things happen.

The original story is now here

I've commented on the header as well, as it all works together...

Title: Coming Back
Titles are very important to me. Like [livejournal.com profile] nightdog_barks, I believe quite firmly that stories 'tell me' what they want to be called. Normally this involves leaning back in the chair and staring into space for a while, but it counts as writing, honest. I generally try to pin down the theme of the story, the one big thing that I want to get across. And in this case, it was obvious.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] jadesfire2808
Word Count: ~9200 ~12,500 with commentary, and therefore split into two parts.
Warnings/Rating: PG but nothing worse than you'd see on Torchwood
Spoilers: None that I could spot for Torchwood but I guess technically for "Parting of the Ways" The commentary has spoilers for most of S1 of Torchwood, as well as S3 of Doctor Who

Summary: Working for Torchwood doesn't exactly turn out as Jack had hoped.

A/N: The second of six stories exploring what Jack did between being left on Satellite Five and Torchwood S1. The Doctor Who episode referenced in this is the 7th Doctor story "The Curse of Fenric." Jack belongs to the BBC etc. Jock, Hugh and the rest are mine.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] crystalshard who helped put flesh on the bones of the story. And then some. Seriously, this woman has beta'd every word of my massive series, and didn't let me get away with anything along the way. She suggested reshaping this and it worked so much better afterwards.

[livejournal.com profile] idle_myrmidon has very kindly drawn Hugh, Hywel and Ianto for me - they look just as I imagined them in my head!

Go see them here and leave nice comments!

Since I'm about to flood you all with my own work, I thought the least I could do was point you in the direction of other people's as well:

[livejournal.com profile] fangrrl_squees The Harkness Supremacy
Not only proving that if it breathes, Jack can flirt with it, this has got plot, pace and action a-plenty.
"What happens when a member of MI6, an assassin and a former time agent run into each other in Hong Kong? Quite a lot."

[livejournal.com profile] terrylj Nothing but Sand
Time-twisting, incredibly ingenious story, that should be confusing but completely works.
"An unexpected event pulls Rose and Jack away from the Doctor, throwing them into separate timestreams."

[livejournal.com profile] miss_zedem Welsh for Beginners
A by turns funny, heartfelt and touching story, with great characterisation and a convincing OC.
"Sometimes you find answers when you weren't looking for them..."
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Plot Bunny)
These are all the drabbles I wrote in my great drabble giveaway yesterday. Because I'm pedantic about these things, each one is exactly 100 words.

The drabble-bar is now closed, as the staff should be a)writing The Wandering Years or b)doing coursework. Not necessarily in that order.
